  1. HN 499 BACHELOR’S CAPSTONE FOR HUMAN SERVICES Unit 9 Seminar

  2. Announcements • Our last seminar together – no seminar for Unit 10 • No graded assignments in Unit 10 • Final reflections in the discussion board are encouraged and appreciated • Unit 9 Final Project due by midnight on Tuesday, June 21

  3. Final Project • For the final project, you will synthesize your understanding of the theories, best practices, and current trends in human services to create a case presentation. • While most of these meetings are informal, many agencies/organizations are beginning to use a more formal approach. • To prepare for this future job responsibility, you will create a paper that could be used during one of these meetings.

  4. Final Project • Begin by deciding the type of agency and job that interests you • Imagine you are a professional working at this agency for the project. • Next, create a hypothetical client or use one from a prior exercise in our class.

  5. Final Project • Follow the suggested structure in the project description for writing your paper. • Add relevant details and leave out minor ones that are not relevant to the client’s progress (e.g., that the client owns a pet is not relevant in most cases).

  6. Final Project Content Suggested Organization of Paper (use sub-headings to organize your information) • Client name and demographics including: • The purpose of this section is to target demographic and descriptive information about the client. • Should be able to develop an impression of the client.

  7. Final Project Content • Presenting problem (sub-heading): What was the reason for the client enrolling in service at your agency? Be specific about the problem, but do not add many extra details by “telling the client’s story;” just write a few sentences about the problem as the client perceived it. • Was there a precipitating set of circumstances? • How long has/have the problem(s) persisted? • Has/have this/these problem(s) occurred before? • What were the circumstances at the time?

  8. Final Project Content • Goals (sub-heading): What are the client’s main intervention/treatment goals? Be specific and add as many as you can think of that would relate to the full scope of services that your agency might provide. However, remember that clients would not work on more than three goals at a time. • Follow the guidelines presented in Unit 8 (see seminar archive) for specific elements or requirements for setting effective goals. • Categories of Goals • Goal Guidelines

  9. Final Project Content • Needs (sub-heading): What other needs does your client have in the moment that others in your agency might be able to provide or assist in making referrals? • Remember to prioritize needs and think about the hierarchy of needs concept

  10. Final Project Content • Crisis (sub-heading): Probably, your client is not currently in crisis, so you would simply report that the client is stabilized and there are no ongoing crises for the moment. If your client is in the middle of a crisis, you would briefly describe it, only giving facts that are relevant.

  11. Final Project Content • Recommendations (sub-heading): This is the part of the paper (meeting) where you provide your professional opinion about the continued direction of the client’s progress, ideas for future goals or strategies for helping the client, and any other suggestions that you have to advance your client’s care. • You will spend time using information from your past classes to support your recommendations, so make this one of the longest sections of your paper.

  12. Final Project Format • This paper should be a minimum of 6–8 pages or 1500–2000 words to respond to the sections in the case presentation. • Write the paper using guidelines of Standard American English, and consult the Kaplan Writing Center if you have questions about grammar or format.

  13. Final Project Format • Remember that all work must be your own and plagiarism is not tolerated. Be sure to review the plagiarism policy in your syllabus. • Citations for support of your recommendations should be in APA format, including the addition of a reference page.

  14. Final Project Reminders • PLEASE get it turned in on time • See syllabus for special late policy • Read the project description carefully • Read the grading rubric carefully • SYNTHESIZE AND APPLY what you have learned throughout the course and throughout your program with Kaplan • Make sure you are very detailed and specific • Use adequate support
