Earth is only known planet with liquid water 4. Life originated in the oceans 5. The oceans help regulate weather and temp 6. There are 5 oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Antarctic, Southern 7. A sea is smaller than an ocean & are partially surrounded by land. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/ocean/

  11. Next… • Missing work handouts are on the table by the door. You can get them AS YOU LEAVE • They are due Monday • Updated progress reports will be printed later that week. • I WILL NOT PRINT UPDATED PROGRESS REPORTS UNTIL NEXT WEDNESDAY

  12. Why do you think the ocean is salty??

  17. B. Ocean water contains salts and gases NB 63 - 1. Salts – Why is the ocean “salty”? • Water evaporates, leaving the salt behind • Rivers carry minerals from the land into the ocean • Ocean water seeps into cracks in the crust and Hydrothermal vents carry the superheated water back up, bringing minerals from the crust with it 2. Dissolved Oxygen and other gases/solids • Photosynthesis -> increases the dissolved Oxygen levels • Respiration -> increases the dissolved CO2 levels • Other ions also exist in the ocean – creating???

Ocean Currents Video NB 67 Cornell Notes: • What do you already know about ocean currents? • How do you think wind affects ocean currents and their patterns of circulation? • How do scientists study currents to track the flow of pollutants and nutrients throughout the seas? • How do ocean current patterns lessen the harmful effects of disasters such as oil spills? • Oceans are considered the “last frontier.” Have you ever imagined what life is like deep on the ocean floor? What would you find in its darkest trenches? • Which parts of the ocean do you think are endangered or threatened and the steps being taken to protect them? • Write any other interesting facts you learn here:

How is weather at the equator different from weather at the poles? • What are some theories about how global warming will affect the oceans and their ability to moderate our climate? • How does global warming threaten coastline communities? • Discuss how the water where you live affects the environmental quality of the ocean. What ocean does the runoff in your community lead to? • How is the international community joining forces to protect the seas? • Make a list of the steps you can take to protect the ocean or a body of water near you.
