  4. Child Abuse Simply Stated Abuse of a child is anything that causes injury or puts the child in danger of physical injury. Child abuse can be physical (such as burns or broken bones), sexual (such as touching of private parts or incest), or emotional (such as belittling or calling the child names)

  5. Sexual abuse is when the child is involved in any sexual activity with an adult or another child who is either older or more powerful

  6. Child abuse may be: Physical - hitting, shaking, burns, human bites, strangulation. . Emotional - constant disapproval, belittling, constant teasing.

  7. Psychological abuse occurs when children are not provided with the necessary environment to develop mentally and/or emotionally. Sexual - fondling, the showing of private parts by an adult, sexual intercourse, oral and anal sex, forcing a child to watch while others have sexual intercourse, incest, pornography

  8. Neglect - absence of adequate food, shelter, emotional and physical security, and medical care. Physical abuse is any physical injury to a child that is not accidental. Emotional and psychological abuse is when a child is not nurtured and is not provided with love and security

  9. Simply stated, Child abuse is the bad treatment of a child under the age of 18 by a parent, caretaker, someone living in their home or someone who works with or around children

  10. WAYS TO CONTROL CHILD ABUSE CASES

  11. Be a nurturing parent Children need to know that they are special, loved and capable of following their dreams

  12. Report suspected abuse or neglect If you have reason to believe a child has been or may be harmed, call your local department of children and family services or you local police department

  13. Monitor your child’s television and video viewing Watching violent films and TV programs can harm young children

  14. Help a friend, neighbour or relative Being a parent isn’t easy. Offer a helping hand take care of the children, so the parent(s) can rest or spend time together.

  15. Help yourself When the big and little problems of your everyday life pile up to the point you feel overwhelmed and out of control – take time out. Don’t take it out on your kid.

  16. If your baby cries… It can be frustrating to hear your baby cry. Learn what to do if your baby won’t stop crying. Never shake a baby – shaking a child may result in severe injury or death.

  17. Get involved Ask your community leaders, clergy, library and schools to develop services to meet the needs of healthy children and families.

  18. Promote programs in school Teaching children, parents and teachers prevention strategies can help to keep children safe
