  2. Punctuation Rule #8: Use commas to set off words that interrupt the flow of a thought in a sentence. EX: A large city, as you can see, employs many police officers. Punctuation Rule #9: Use a comma after conjunctive adverbs such as however, furthermore, nevertheless, and therefore. EX: The city is growing; therefore, the city payroll must grow.   3. Review your Bellringers with punctuation rules. Write rules 1-9 on your paper. When finished, sit quietly and wait for further instruction. BR #53November 14, 2012

  4. Punctuation Rule #10: Use a comma before and, or, or but when it joins main clauses. EX: Farming is a business, and farmers need to make a profit. EX: Farmers must sell their crops, or they cannot afford to replant. EX: Farming can be rewarding, but it is hard work. BR #54November 15, 2012
