  2. Structure of the plot: • Exposition: two brothers making good boots in a shop in London. There is a firs-person narrator. • Conflict: The two Gessler brothers and the Big firms • Climax: The story climaxes two times: The death of the first brother and the death of the second brother • Resolution: the big firm takes over and the narrator leaves the place disappointed

  3. Characters: • The two Gessler brothers • The Narrator: the narrator is a character in the story. We do not know his name

  4. Narrator’s point of view: First person

  5. The atmosphere of the story: Silent, and church-like; we hear sometimes the tip tap of Mr. Gessler’s slippers as he walks on the wooden floor

  6. Symbolism: Leather is the main symbol which stands for quality and idealism; the big firm stands for quantity and materialism,

  7. Language and Style: There are two levels of language. The narrator’s language is standard and the language of the two brothers is accented’ they speak English with a foreign (German) accent • The style is precise, lucid, serious, and interesting

  8. Themes: • The story represents the ongoing conflict between virtue and vice, materialism and idealism, love and hate, quality and quantity selflessness and selfishness, essence and appearance • The story shows an example of people who refuse to compromise their ideals despite all kinds of pressure • The story is about shoe-making but its message can be applied to every walk of life
