  1. Path Computation Element (PCE) Based Architecture for Path Computation and Modeling OPNET Andrea Fumagalli Marco Tacca Kai Wu Yue He (UTD-OpNeAR)

  2. Path Computation • Constraint-based path computation in Traffic Engineering systems such as MPLS and GMPLS network • Path computation in large, multi-domain, multi-region or multi-layer networks • Path Computation Element (PCE)-based model to address this problem space

  3. PCE Architecture • PCC: Path Computation Client • PCE: Path Computation Element (component/application/network node) • TED: Traffic Engineering Database (fed by IGP extension or potentially by other means) • TE LSP: Traffic Engineering MPLS Label Switched Path (explicit path or loose path) • Domains

  4. Domain • Any collection of network elements within a common sphere of address management or path computation responsibility • Examples: IGP areasAutonomous Systems (ASes) sub-domains of areas or ASesRunning protocols: OSPF, IS-IS, RSVP

  5. Domain • areas:

  6. Domain • ASes:

  7. PCE communication Protocol (PCEP) • PCC-PCE Communication:PCC sends path computation request to PCE;PCE replies path computation result to PCC. • PCE-PCE Communication:PCE relaying path computation requests to next PCE;PCE replying computation results of inter/intra-domain path computation.

  8. PCE communication Protocol (PCEP) Backward Recursive PCE-based Computation (BRPC) procedure: • PCC selects PCE • PCE relays the request to next PCE along the path • Destination PCE computes the VSPT rooted at the Destination router (point to multi-point tree) • Destination PCE returns VSPT along the path • Intermediate PCE computes VSPT rooted at the destination (point to multi-point tree) • PCE replies to PCC

  9. PCE Architecture Technique Solutions covered • Composite, external and multiple PCE path computation; Inter/Intra-domain path computation, Inter-layer path computation • Centralized vs. Distributed computation • Synchronization, PCE discovery and load balancing, detection of PCE liveness • PCC-PCE, PCE-PCE communication • TED synchronization, stateful and stateless PCEs, monitoring, policy and confidentiality, and evaluation metrics • www.ietf.org

  10. Simulation – PCE queuing models of Multi-PCE path computation approach • OPNET Modeler 12.0 • www.opnet.com • www.utdallas.edu/~yxh052000 - Discrete Event Simulator - Elements: Subnet, node, link, packet - Processes: ▪ Finite state machines ▪ Queues - Protocols: ▪ MPLS, RSVP, OSPF, ISIS, IP

  11. Modeling • Two types of nodes • PCC (routers) • PCE (border-routers: ASBR/ABR) • AS border routers are all on the backbone • No protocol stack assumed • PCE packet (request, relay and response) • Three processes • Traffic generation • PCC relay • PCE relay

  12. PCE and PCC nodes

  13. Inter-Area Path Computation

  14. Inter-AS Path Computation
