  1. LEGS Ancient Egypt By Davi Bendavid

  2. Law There was strong law in ancient Egypt. These laws were about respect, power, and punishment. They spoke of the vizier, the pharaoh’s second in command, quite like a prime minister. They talked about what things the vizier was to know about and what he was in charge of. Carved into a cliff in Nauri, in Nubia, were laws written about stealing to warn thieves of the punishments for stealing in Nubia.

  3. Empire When the Old Kingdom came to an end, it was replaced by an empire called the Middle Kingdom. The Hyksos, from the mountains of Canaan, were skilled in warfare. They used horses and chariots which were unfamiliar to the Egyptians. They conquered Lower Egypt and ruled it for about 100 years. Then Pharaoh Ahmose I attacked and regained control of Lower Egypt. This was the start of a period called the New Kingdom. Pharaohs starting with Ahmose I made the strongest military power in its part of the world. During the New Kingdom, Egypt created an empire that stretched from Kush in the north, to the Euphrates River in the south.

  4. Government Egypt was divided into two sections based on the flow of the Nile, Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. They were ruled by two different kings. Menes was the king of Upper Egypt. Menes led his army to Lower Egypt and conquered it. He became the first pharaoh. He ruled both Upper and Lower Egypt. The king of Upper Egypt wore a white crown, and the king of Lower Egypt wore a red crown. The new crown Menes had made was a mix of the two. It represented the unification of Egypt. The time when early pharaohs worked to build unity was called the Old Kingdom. The pharaoh had political powers. He would elect people to serve in the government as well as other powers.

  5. Society There were many jobs in ancient Egypt. Like in Mesopotamia there were lots of farmers. Others dug irrigation canals and built shadoofs, which were devices to draw water from the Nile. Another social class is the scribes. They were specially trained writers. Only boys could become scribes. The boys began training at about age 10. They spent hours practicing on broken pottery. Egypt, like Nubia, its close neighbor was rich in iron gold and silver. Many Egyptian citizens worked in these mines to mine these minerals. Kush’s social pyramid is very similar to Egypt's. At the top was the king or queen. Below the king or queen are the priests and soldiers. Then below them are the merchants, artisans, and farmers. Even below them on the bottom of the pyramid are the slaves.
