NHS Swindon About NHS Swindon • It serves a local population of around 200,000 • It is coterminous with Swindon Borough Council, and includes the ward of Shrivenham in Oxfordshire • It employs nearly 950 staff directly, with 500 providing community based healthcare. • Annual turnover is in the region of £300 million • It is responsible for ensuring the implementation of NHS policy locally. The patient, user or carer must be at the heart of all we do

Main functions • NHS Swindon receives funding for the local • population against which we: • Work alongside partners with the local population to • improve health and well-being • Identify what services are needed to meet needs • Commission (buy) those services through contracts • with a range of providers • Run a number of services itself

  4. NHS Swindon • 213,360 registered patients • 3.2m prescriptions • 2,782 babies born • 8,195 adults with diabetes • 49,622 visits to the Clover Centre • 18,739 non elective admissions • 66,227 new outpatient attendances • 5,440 inpatient and 18,701 daycase operations

  5. Our vision As local health community leaders, we will work with partners to: • Drive out inequalities in health and well wellbeing • Drive up service quality and access to care • Give people more influence, choice and control over their lives

NHS Swindon Which Services do we Provide? • Learning Disability services • Sexual Health services • Podiatry • 2 Walk in Centres – Clover and Carfax Street • 60 bedded Intermediate Care Centre (SwICC) • Diagnostic Echo - Cardiography • Out of Hours services • Community Nursing • District Nursing • Health Visiting • School nursing • Some specialist nursing • Health Promotion • Physiotherapy • Occupational Therapy • Speech and Language Therapy

NHS National Reforms • The White Paper “Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS”, sets out proposals for the NHS to become a truly world-class service that is: easy to access, treats people as individuals and offers care that is safe and of the highest quality • The Aim is for health outcomes and quality health services that are as good as anywhere in the world • The Vision is for our NHS to put patients at the heart of everything that we do and to empower clinicians to deliver results based on the needs of patients

NHS National Reforms • Decision making about healthcare services will be given back to clinicians, in partnership with patients, for example through the GP Consortium for their local communities • Clinicians will be set free to make decisions about care based on patients’ needs and to achieve the best outcomes • A new independent NHS Commissioning Board will allocate and account for NHS resources, lead on quality improvement, and promote patient involvement and choice • NHS Trusts will become Foundation Trusts and be given more freedom • Monitor will be developed into an economic regulator and the Care Quality Commission will act as a quality inspectorate across health and social care

NHS National Reforms“No decision about me, without me” • Patients will be put at the heart of everything that we do: that • means giving them real choice about where and, in some • cases, how they are treated • They will be able to access comprehensive information on • many aspects of health allowing them to rate hospitals and • clinicians according to the quality of care they provide • They will be given a stronger voice through the introduction of • a new consumer champion, HealthWatch • They will benefit from better health outcomes through a • relentless focus on continuously improving the clinical • outcomes that really matter, not on inputs or processes
