  1. Stephen F. Austin “Father of Texas”

  2. Introducing Stephen F. Austin Hello! My name is Stephen F. Austin! If you’re wondering, the F stands for Fuller. I was born November 3rd, 1793 and died December 27, 1836  I know, it’s sad but I did a lot of wonderful things while I was alive. That’s my grave you see below. I’m buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas. My grave reads, Wise, Gentle, Courageous, and PatientHe was the founderof a mighty common wealth Isn’t that nice of them to say about me?

  3. Why Study Me? • Well, I’m pretty important to the state you live in! I’m known as the “father of Texas.” • Why you ask? Because I worked very hard to settle the territory. • I’m very proud to say that I’m the son of Moses Austin, who was the first to get permission for Americans to settle in Spanish Texas and also established the first Anglo-American settlement west of the Mississippi River.

  4. HOW DID I SETTLE TEXAS?

  5. My father got a grant of land in Texas for colonization. • He died and left me the grant. I chose to settle along the Brazos & Colorado Rivers. • This was not an easy task , but I wanted to make my father proud! At first I had trouble with the Mexican government, because they had a problem with me transferring supplies to the area. • Luckily things started to get better…

  6. By 1825, 297 families lived in my colony. These families are now known as “The Old Three-Hundred.” • Not to brag, but I continued to negotiate with the Mexican government and even secured other land grants. • In a ten years I helped more than 15,000 families come to Texas. • But things started to get hard…

  7. Ohno!Texaswehaveaproblem! Like I said, it was not always easy…I ran into problems with Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Who is Santa Anna? • He was a Mexican political leader and the president of Mexico for a long time. • At first we were friends, but as he got more control he limited our freedom as Texans.

  8. How I fixed the problem I wanted to put a stop to the absolute power of Santa Anna! This eventually led to the Texas Revolution! Which was fought from October 2, 1835 to April 21, 1836 between Mexico and the Texas

  9. TexasRevolution You will study more about the Texas Revolution soon, but what I can tell you for obvious reasons is WE WON! And because we won the Republic of Texas was created! So you see boy’s and girl’s it proves that if you work hard and believe in yourself you can achieve anything! Maybe one day a fourth grade student will be studying you! 

  10. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! • After learning about Stephen F. Austin, the students will go further by getting in groups and writing a script reenacting any event they learned in today’s power point. They will be given time to further research the topic they wish to act out. • Examples include but do not limit to: The Old Three Hundred, Conversations between Santa Anna & Stephen F. Austin, Conversations between Moses Austin & his son.
