EndNote --for managing papers & bibliographies • Construct papers in Word (built-in templates) Watch bibliographies, table and figure lists appear instantly • An online search tool: • Search online databases • Import files from online services • Directly export references from databases and full text journal websites • Organize references, images and PDFs in any language (QUOSA too!)

New features of EndNote X • Create links to PDFs automatically by dragging and dropping onto an EndNote record. • Use new .enlx library format to share self-contained libraries with colleagues. • View up to eight fields in the reference list display • Use "Show" and "Hide Empty Fields" to reduce scrolling through reference detail. • NOT backwards compatible with EN 7!

  25. Importing/Exporting • Download references from PubMed in an EndNote-friendly format • Import downloaded references into your EndNote library • Directly export references from Ovid, Web of Science, and many full text journals

PubMed Importing Steps • Search PubMed; select references to import; with no selections, all get imported • Change Display format to MEDLINE • Click Send to (file); name your file (.txt) – remembering where you saved it! • Return to EndNote- Open your library • Select Import from the File menu. • Choose file and import option (filter) – to get list, choose Other Filters • Select the PubMed filter • Click the Import button

Rules for direct entry of references • Enter one author/editor name per line • Format author names: Last name, first name Last name, initials(use a space or periods) • Enter all author names – no et al. • Use a comma after corporate names: Ex.:  U.S. Department of Agriculture, • Journal names – controlled by the style-most leave format as entered. • Downloading Terms lists provides alternative journal title formats

Citing Electronic Sources • Use the Electronic Article, Electronic Book, or Web page reference type for citing material from a Web page BUT • For a journal article that appears both online and in print, use the regular Journal Article reference type • Email discussions should be cited as Personal Communications
