  2. About Cathy McConkey • Grew up in South Jersey but have been a “Southerner” since 1975 • Married 32 yrs., 2 children in college, live in Roswell, Cobb County • Graduated from The University of Alabama – Roll Tide! • 35 Years of Experience-1st, 2nd, 3rd

  3. First Grade Goals • To create a safe and nurturing environment • To foster Respect for others • To provide the academic tools needed to advance to 2nd grade • To grow academically, socially, and emotionally • To always enjoy the learning process

  4. Classroom Environment • Water bottles with water only. • Minimal wall decor • Brain Gym – simple movements, music • Plants – great air cleaners • Lamps – softens overhead lights • Seating assignments change • Classical music played in room

  5. Murdock’s Mission and Beliefs Murdock Elementary School will provide students with the foundational skills necessary to become productive citizens through the development of literacy, critical thinking, problem solving, effective communication and collaboration, and personal responsibility.

  6. Murdock Information • Security System-Enter through front door only. • Visitors Lunch Table – Your child only, please send in a note that you will be coming. • Changes in Transportation – Must be in writing! No phone calls or emails. • Lunch Money in white envelope. Online Meal Pay-make sure you have student #. • Medicine dispensed by nurse. Lip balm, cough drops allowed in class with note.

  7. Policy Changes • Visitors: Cobb County Schools have been equipped with a video surveillance system. All visitors must be buzzed in after presenting identification. Please bring your ID when visiting the school. • Lunch: To better ensure the safety of our students, this policy has been revised. Parents/Guardians must send a note in the morning if their child is expecting a lunch visitor. Please specify the name of the visitor(s) and the relationship to the child in the note. Visitors will be checked in at the front office. We will apologetically deny any visitor for whom a letter has not been sent. Enrolling parents/guardians are always welcome without a note!

  8. MESF exists to provide resources that will enhance the learning environment and educational opportunities of the students at Murdock. Your donation to the 2013-2014 Patron Program will support a full year of science and technology programming as well as a new I-Pad Initiative. Complete and return the Patron Program form today (or no later than the September 5th Deadline.) All donations qualify for the classroom competition, whereby classes with the highest levels of participation qualify for an in school fieldtrip featuring the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Our goal is for 100% participation.

Schedule • 7:25 – 8:05 Morning Work & Routines, Morning Walk • 8:05 – 9:10 Math • 9:10 – 10:55 Snack, Language Arts, prepare for lunch • 11:05– 11:35 Lunch • 11:35 - 12:20 Language Arts/Content • 12:25 – 12:45 Recess • 12:45 – 1:10 Read Aloud • 1:10 - 1:20 Pack up • 1:20 - 2:05 Specials • 2:10 – 2:25 Dismissal

Math COMMON CORE CURRICULUM Linear vs Logical Math, Student-centered learning Student explains “how” by telling or writing Number Sense is KEY Language Arts COMMON CORE CURRICULUM Build “stamina” to increase comprehension and language skills Stresses importance on listening and speaking where students are engaged in meaningful conversations

  11. Specials • Monday : P.E. • Tuesday: Art • Wednesday : P.E. • Thursday: Music • Friday: Fitness • Children should wear sneakers for all Specials, except Art.

  12. Additional Support Classes • Science Lab lessons with Mrs. Kaufman {thank you MESF} • Computer Lab lessons by TBA. {thank you MESF} • Media Center is every week. We will begin Wednesday, August 14. • Guidance is every other week with Mrs. Haskett.

  13. Communication • Class Blog on school site • E-mail: cathy.mcconkey@cobbk12.org Keep in mind I will not check emails after 7:55am. I will check during Specials and after school. • Conferences (Conference Week: October 21-25) and as needed. • Progress Reports, as needed, and Report Cards every Nine Weeks • Daily report/Weekly Report in Red Folder

  14. Homework • Reading every night. • Review of skills introduced in math and language arts, as needed. • Never used as a grade • Homework is interactive

  15. First Grade Testing • CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) • 9/18-9/20 Verbal, Numerical, Nonverbal

  16. Class Behavior Plan • Quiet acknowledgement of inappropriate behavior • Conference with child • Phone call/note or email to parent • Office Referral

  17. Consequences • Minus in area of weakness on Red Weekly Folder • Walk a lap during recess, then discuss reason with teacher. • Conference with child and parent • Office referral

  18. Monkey Money • Children earn Bananas for compliments • Children earn Bananas for leading/not following • Children earn Bananas for work/task completion • Bananas can be used to buy different rewards

  19. Volunteers • Room Parents • Parent Reader-on Friday, after lunch • Parent Helpers – copy parent, field trip off campus chaperone, “festive” activities/centers • Wish List Items/ Prize donations
