  1. PM 330 Biosecurity Biosecurity = safety of living things To the poultry industry…. protecting poultry flocks from any type of infectious agent - viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic

  2. Biosecurity – Needs of poultry producers Dr.Birkett Howarth, UGA From Dr.Birkett Howarth, UGA • Original poultry farms were small in size and bird # • 100s to 1000s of birds

  3. Biosecurity – Needs of poultry producers From Dr.Birkett Howarth, UGA • Now, vertical integration → → very large farms • high bird #’s • 100,000s of birds!

  4. Hatchery Feed Mill Marketing MegaBirdCo Vet Med QC/QA Live Prod Housing Mainten. Genetics Breeding Transp. Transp. Process Live Haul

  5. Biosecurity – Preventing disease in poultry • Sources of disease • new birds - wild birds, rodents, insects • carrier w/in flock - vaccines (live, contaminated) • infected eggs - contaminated feed • humans (hands, feet, clothes) - water • dust, feathers & manure - air

  6. Biosecurity – Preventing disease in poultry • Mechanisms to control disease • Control human traffic • Control pests (rodents, CATS) • Control insects • Control plant growth near bldgs Agent Host Environment

  7. Biosecurity – Preventing disease in poultry • Controlling human traffic • Good records of access to bldgs

  8. Biosecurity – Preventing disease in poultry • Controlling human traffic • Good records of access to bldgs • 2. Control what people are carrying • - shower in/out facility • - coveralls/lab coats • - booties, hairnets, gloves etc…. • - footbaths • - wash your hands!!! 3. Keep all doors locked to keep out intruders

  9. Biosecurity – Preventing disease in poultry • Controlling human traffic 4. Control vehicle movement ALWAYS clean to dirty NEVER backwards 5. Keep vehicles clean Sanitize upon facility entry & exit http://www.ryko.com/adweb/R168Main.jpg 9/04

  10. Biosecurity – Preventing disease in poultry http://www.zealindia.com/gifs/header-chick-vaccine1.jpg 9/04 • Controlling bird disease 1. Vaccinations - choose appropriate vaccine - choose appropriate administration - be aware of risks! 2. Flock profiling - routine serology and necropsy

  11. Biosecurity – Preventing disease in poultry • Controlling bird disease 3. Cleaning house appropriately between flocks - downtime helps determine appropriate protocol 4. Proper disposal of dead animals - quick removal - incinerate or bag & dispose 5. Reduce stress in house - stress increases disease susceptibility! 6. Keep ages/species separated

  12. Biosecurity – Preventing disease in poultry • Controlling bird disease 7. Report suspected disease outbreaks - companion, production or wild birds http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/ah/avian_health_program.htm http://www.health.co.hernando.fl.us/WestNileVirus/dbsurv082302.jpg 9/04

  13. Biosecurity – Impact on human health Food poisoning linked to parties Poorly-cooked poultry is a source of food-poisoning • Healthier bird = healthier food product!

  14. Biosecurity – Impact on human health • 2. Healthier bird = more $$$ to producer & consumer! END cost consumers > $160 million to eradicate increased poultry prices 21 commercial layer flocks destroyed (> 3 million birds) http://www.aphis.usda.gov/lpa/issues/enc/newcastle012103b.gif 9/04

  15. Biosecurity – Impact on human health 3. Good biosecurity reduces threat of bioterrorism http://www.niaid.nih.gov/director/congress/1998/0303/graphics/poster5.gif 9/04 For more information : http://courses.che.umn.edu/00fscn8318-1s/2003%20Faculty%20Folder/ Biosecurity/838LogisticsBioterror-Full.pdf
