  1. THE BEST WATERPROOFING & WEATHER PROTECTION SMAC® ALL AROUND PROTECTION Based on Multi-ceramic & Nano Technology

  2. PROTECTION OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES Protection of modern concrete structures is the most serious problem being faced by all the stake holders in the industry, worldwide. Most of the solutions devised, can offer protection within certain limits: applicable both to the treatment & the structure.

  3. These limitations mainly constitute the physical & in some cases, chemical stability parameters of the structure and the treatment applied to it. The long term durability of the treatment applied is a function of these attributes of the treatment and the substrate on which it has been applied. It must be borne in mind that, good workmanship & good quality of all the materials are of paramount importance and any subsequent treatment can’t be a sure remedy to cure the problems arising due to lack of them.

  4. Structure Parameters The important attributes for a structure for devising a good protective treatment can be summarized as given below: • Integrity of the structural element to be treated: Distorted/flaked/damaged • Stability of the structural system • Probable dimensional variations in the element to be treated: Expansion/contraction

  5. Type of the structure element : Temporary/Long Term • Service conditions anticipated: Immersed/Dry/Indoor/Outdoor/Mixed/ Chemical Resistance/Abrasion Resistance /Damp Some other site specific parameters may also be required to be considered, if the situation so warrants. For example: Additional service like Temperature Insulation, required.

  6. Treatment Parameters The important attributes of the proposed treatment under consideration for prolonged service can be summarized as below: • Type of protection required: Long term/short term: Simple/Complex treatment • Temperature variations in the structural system: Flexible/Rigid treatment • Joints in the structure like construction and/or expansion type: Sealant application

  7. Nature of substrate: Concrete/Plaster/Brick or Stone Masonry compatibility. • Level of the structure with respect to GL: +ve/-ve side application, water head. • Service conditions anticipated: Immersed/Dry/Indoor/Outdoor/Mixed/ Chemical Resistance/Abrasion Resistance Some other site specific conditions may be required to be considered, like subsequent decorative treatment application & Heat insulation.

  8. Treatments Available Commercially available treatments for a structure are mainly classified into following distinct types: • Various coatings like Epoxies, Polyurethanes, Acrylics, Silicones, Silanes, Siloxanes, Rubberised coatings etc. • Membrane treatments like felts, plastic meshes, fiber glass reinforcement etc embedded in various coating materials mentioned above.

  9. Water repellent treatments like Silicones, Silanes, Siloxanes etc. • Penetrating sealers like Crystalline waterproofing systems. • Sealants like Poly Sulphides, Acrylics, Polyurethanes, Silicones, Epoxies etc. • Fast setting plugging compounds • Integral mixing compounds based on various chemical compositions (Ready-mix mortars are based on this concept)

  10. Salient Features of Various Treatments The treatments available in the market can be broadly divided into two basic types: • Rigid type treatments • Flexible type treatments Rigid type treatments can’t withstand subsequent stresses in the substrate & crack with it. Epoxies, Conventional cementitious renders, Penetrants, Cement based Acrylic coatings are all rigid type treatments.

  11. Rigid treatments are chosen for the structural elements, for which service conditions are stable in respect of fatigue & temperature. For example: small slabs, WC areas, sub-soil structures & water reservoirs. These are also the choice for good wear/abrasion & chemical resistance during service life. Flexible treatments are the choice when the substrates are open to atmospheric vagaries and when the fatigue & temperature variations are anticipated during service tenure of the treatment.

  12. Flexible treatments can take care of future deformation, when applied with proper choice & prior consultation with a Waterproofing & Construction Chemicals Consultant. Silicones, Silanes, Siloxanes, Polyurethanes, Rubbererized coatings, Acrylics, Tar & Bitumen & Membranes are the flexible treatments. The degree of elasticity varies considerably among them & a choice is to be made depending upon the structure to be treated.

  13. It must be noted, that these treatments can take care of minor variations onlyand major variations, if anticipated, must be resolved at the design & construction stage itself. Further, no single treatment can be a single remedy of all the anticipated problems. A judicious combination of multiple choices result in a sound structure protection for an extended period of time.

  14. Other major consideration is the UV stability & Toxicity. Many Epoxies, Tar, Bitumen require a protective render to protect them from UV radiation. Similarly, some treatments can perform from –ve side of the water pressure also, while others can’t. Only Crystalline Penetrating Sealers are effective from –ve pressure side.

  15. Prime Consideration For Selection For a good protective treatment to be effective over a long period of time, some important aspects to be considered while finalization are as below: • Prime functions required to be performed by the protective treatment. • Additional functions required to be performed by the protective treatment • Financial constraints/implications

  16. First, a good protective treatment performs the primary functions like Waterproofing /Weatherproofing /Chemical Protection etc efficiently, in the existing environment of the site. By this, we mean that it has required attributes like elasticity, abrasion resistance, UV resistance, ease of application etc suitable for that particular structure, to the extent practically possible.

  17. Second, additional functions such as: • Water drainage • -ve side application • Thermal insulation • Aesthetic appearance • Maintenance in future etc Must also be considered.

  18. Lastly, the most important aspect of financial considerations comes into picture. The rates come last in the hierarchy, as we must first consider the functional efficacy of the treatment. Then, to achieve the required correct performance, we should proceed for the most economical treatment. Remember: Quality never comes cheap. The right quality at an appropriate cost is the key to success.

  19. THE SMAC® PROTECTION The SMAC® all purpose protection was developed by SM Adhesives, Mumbai, keeping in mind the Indian weather conditions as well as all the constraints mentioned previously. It encompasses most of the desirable attributes required in Indian weather conditions. It is based on Multi-ceramic & Nano technology, which produces a unique protective effect.

  20. About SM Adhesives SM Adhesives was founded by Mr. Atul Awade, an entrepreneur, in 1998. Mr. Awade completed his graduation in Chemical Engineering in 1994. He was with Hyundai Heavy Industries as Project Head for an industrial project. He handled the responsibilities of Civil as well as Mechanical part of the project. He started SM Adhesives with products like Waterproofing & Anti-corrosive coatings.

  21. SM Adhesives has grown at about 15% cumulatively, since then, on y-o-y basis. We have developed a revolutionary concept in the field of Structural Protection: SMAC® All Purpose Protection. It is a concept encompassing most of the protective requirements. It relieves the construction professionals of multiple & complicated protective installations. Further, by being installed by factory trained personnel, it offers best quality. The important point: It eliminates conventional BB coba type treatments & saves environment by conserving precious scarce natural resources.

  22. OUR PHILOSOPHY At SM Adhesives, we follow 6 S approach: • Sound Technology • Service Excellence • Superior Quality • Selfless Devotion to Clients • Strong Long Term Relationships • Sagacious Business & Environment Approach

  23. What is SMAC® Protection? SMAC®has four courses installed over the substrate. Each course serves specific & distinct function. The courses are: • SMAC® Bondcrete HR Penetrating & Heat Insulation Base coat • SMAC® UV stabilised Polypropylene Membrane • SMAC® Elastobond Elastomeric Heat Reflective Coat • SMAC® Polyurethane Screed Top Coat

  24. SMAC® Bondcrete HR is a liquid formulation which is an organic polymer fortified by Multi-ceramic & Nano Technology. It has penetrating ability in the substrate to seal the capillaries. It also provides heat insulation effect because of SMAC® Therm technology. SMAC® UV stabilised Polypropylene membrane is the reinforcement, which is manufactured with special care to withstand Ultra Violet embrittlement effectively. It resists expansion/contraction stresses & consequent cracking of the treatment.

  25. SMAC® Elastobond is again a liquid formulation incorporating the above mentioned properties, but also has good elastic nature to withstand cracking. SMAC® PU screed is the top coat having hard, wear resistant aggregates in Polyurethane matrix. This coat takes care of the normal wear & tear due to foot traffic during the service life of the treatment.

  26. SMAC® MULTI-CERAMIC & NANO TECHNOLOGY SMAC® Multi-ceramic & Nano Technology is the result of continuous research to homogenize all the treatment elements to act in unison to work in tandem. This is essential to produce all the desired protection simulteniously. The ceramic nano particles are dispersed in the liquid polymer phase. These ceramic particles are inert in nature & are hollow.

  27. Polymer nano particles are also there in the liquid phase. After application of SMAC® protection, polymer nano particles penetrate through the substrate micro cracks & fill them. Further, they react with the ceramic nano particles to form a cross-linked stable & elastic phase. The technology ensures that the ceramic particles float on the top & also cover the bottom layer of the treatment.
