Island community Hiiumaa • Second largest island in Estonia • territory 1000 km², coastline 325 km, highest top 68 m, forest area 70% • 5 municipalities • ca 11,000 people, ca 4, 500 in Kärdla • main jobs are in fishing and fish processing • yearly turnover of Hiiumaa enterprises and public sector 70,33 MEURO (2000)

Why Hiiumaa? • international experience in cooperation with: • B7Baltic Sea islands Gotland and Öland (Sweden), Äland (autonomous Finnish island) Rügen (Germany), Bornholm (Denmark) • CPMR Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions • INSULA Internationa Scientific counsil for Island development

  4. What we have done so far? • 1992 - Development Concept for Hiiumaa • 1995 - pioneer region in Estonia on ICT development • 1997-2000 - Hiiumaa 2010, financed by UNDP • An Info Technological Harbour • 2001 - Distance Work Thematic Group initiated by the Prime Minister

Implementing the MEDIS Planning Manual • Project organisation: • Steering Committee - County IT Council • Working Groups - Political, Education, Entrepreneurs, IT, Third Sector • Project Management - Project Leader, Assistant • experts • Public participation via media • documentation at www.mv.hiiumaa.ee/medis/

Medis collecting data • Study on ICT current situation on Hiiumaa: • population: 500 residents of all age groups • entrepreneurs: 79 directors of firms and individuals • state offices: 39 • principals and teachers of 9 schools • Poll was done by public administration students of Suuremõisa Technical School
