  1. Density p. 20

  2. FLOAT OR SINK???

  3. Mass Density = ------------ Volume Density of water = 1 g/ml If an object is less dense it will float. If an object is more dense than it will sink

  4. Density • Density: ratio of mass to volume • characteristic property that depends on the composition of a substance • doesNOTdepend on the size of the sample • It is an INTENSIVE PROPERTY

  5. Density Column • When several immiscible (does not mix) liquids are combined, they form layers or a DENSITY COLUMN • The liquids will order themselves according to their densities • smaller density  TOP • larger density  BOTTOM

  6. Learning Check! Which diagram represents the liquid layers in the cylinder? (K) Karo syrup (1.4 g/mL), (V) vegetable oil (0.91 g/mL,) (W) water (1.0 g/mL) 1) 2) 3) K W V V K W W V K

  7. Equation Density = Mass___ Volume M D V

  8. Solve for each variable • density = • mass = • volume = Mass volume Density x volume M Mass density D V

  9. Example #1 • What is the density of a material that has a mass of 15 g and a volume of 3 mL? D= m V M m= 15 grams V= 3 mL D = 5 g/mL V D

  10. Example #2 • What is the mass of an object if its density is 2 g/mL and its volume is 5mL? m = Dx V M D= 2 g/mL V= 5 mL = 2 g/mLx 5mL D V = 10 g

  11. Example #3 • What is the volume of a liquid with a density of 2.0 g/mL and a mass of 8 g? V = m D M D= 2.0g/mL m= 8g = __8g__ 2.0 g/mL D V = 4 mL

  12. How do I measure the volume of a solid object???

  13. Find the Volume of the Cube • V = l x w x h • V = 2 cm x 2cm x 2cm • V= 8 cm3 • If the Mass of the cube is 4 g… what is the density? • D = .5 g/cm3

  14. How do you measure the volume of IRREGULARLY shaped solids?

  15. Volume Displacement A solid displaces a matching volume of water when the solid is placed in water. 33 mL 25 mL

  16. Learning Check! What is the density (g/mL) of 48 g of a metal if the metal raises the level of water in a graduated cylinder from 25 mL to 33 mL? 1) 0.2 g/ mL 2) 6 g/mL3) 252 g/mL 33 mL 25 mL

  17. Lab! • Today you will determine the density of water by taking mass measurements of 5 different volumes of water. • Measure the mass of the graduated cylinder first! • Measure PRECISELY!  • GRAPH: Volume on X-axis & Mass on Y-axis • Theoretical Value of the density of water is 1g/mL.Use this for post lab question #4 to see how close you got!

  18. Exit Ticket • Which object has the LEAST Density? WHY? 1) Water 2)Granite 3)Air Mass= 8.0g Mass=30.g Mass=0.3g Volume=8.0mL Volume= 9.0mL Volume=400mL
