  1. Reading Begins at Home Strategies for Families to Use Before, During and After Reading Presented by Diane M. Leja Literacy Coach

  2. Before Reading • Think about and discuss the cover and title of the book • Discussion Points: Tell what you think this book will be about. Tell why you think the book is about that.

  3. Before Reading • Take a picture walk. • Look at the pictures and tell what you see! Don’t read the words yet! • Discussion Points • Tell about what you see. • Tell about what you notice.

  4. Before Reading Can be used also for after reading book • Find connections to the text Discussion Points: Tell what the book reminds you of. Tell what the book makes you think of. Tell about other books that seem similar.

  5. Before Reading • Word Find • I spy_______ on page ______. Can you find it? • Plant Vocabulary • What sound do you hear at the beginning/end of the word? • Can you fin it on the page? • We could say _____ or_____. Which word do you think they are using here?

  6. During Reading • Track the words (only for students below grade 1 reading) • Point to each word as you read

  7. During Reading • Frame Tricky Words Put one pointer finger on each side of the word. Use special tools to point out words.

  8. During Reading • Use the strategies of Good Readers • Check the Pictures • Go Back and Read it Again • Get Your Mouth Ready for the First Sound in the Word • Find Chunks you Know (- at) • Think About the meaning of the Story • Skip it and Go Back • Touch the Print as you read • Stretch the Word

  9. Stuck on a word? Ask Yourself… Does it make sense? • Does it sound right? • Does it look right?

  10. After Reading • Discuss the Text • Tell if you liked the book. • Tell about why you did or didn’t like the book. • Tell what this story reminds you of. • Tell what happened in the story. (in sequence) In the beginning,… Then… Next… After… Finally,… • Tell the theme or main idea of the story.

  11. Retelling a Story • When retelling a story- the student tells about everything that happened in the story in order and in their own words. • Characters • Setting • Problem • Events • Solution • Ending • How did the characters feel at the end of the story? • How do you know how they felt?
