  2. What is a Disability There are several ways of defining disability. The social model looks at ways in which disabled people live their lives and the barriers that society imposes. The medical model defines impairment, disability and handicap as follows: Impairment – loss or abnormality in structure or function Disability – inability to perform an activity within normal range for a human being because of impairment Handicap – inability to carry out normal social roles because of impairment/ handicap

  3. Types of Impairment The subsequent effects of an illness, accident or medical condition upon a way a person functions can be divided into two categories: Visible and Invisible. For example someone in a wheel chair has an obvious physical impairment. Whilst someone who suffers from diabetes may have a visual impairment and mobility issues due to slow circulation & loss of sensation.

Facts about Disabled People in London(Information taken from Health in London 2003) • Disabled people are twiceas likely to be unemployed than non-disabled people • In 2003, 26% of young disabled people (16–24)were unemployed • 20% of households include a disabled person • Only 17% of public buildings are accessible to disabled people to the mobility standards of the Building Regulations (Equality & Diversity Audit Commission 2002) • Household incomes tend to be 20–30% lower for disabled people (Child poverty action group 2001) • The average pay for disabled people in London is 20% lower than the average pay for non-disabled Londoners • Disabled people are half as likely to be managersor professionals

Disability Discrimination Act • The Disability Discrimination Act gives disabled people important rights not to be discriminated against • in accessing everyday goods and services like shops, cafes, banks, cinemas and places of worship • in buying or renting land or property • in accessing or becoming a member of a larger private club • in accessing the functions of public bodies • It is unlawful for employers to discriminate against disabled people for a reason related to their disability
