  1. Stuffing Box • A stuffing box is an assembly that contains a seal around a rotating shaft passing from a fluid-filled area to vapor filled area. • Where is it used? • Propeller on a boat • Large centrifugal pumps • Steam engine • Et al.

  2. How it Works • Acts like a large scale compression fitting • Stuffing is trapped behind a removable gland • Leaks a few drops per minute while the shaft is turning • 10 psi lubricant can be used if the process fluid is abrasive

  3. Operating Conditions • Flax stuffing boxes are used to hold steam inside the cylinder of a steam engine • More extreme conditions would require more high-tech stuffing material • Oil field stuffing boxes can operate up to 540°F and 3,000 psi

  4. Materials of Construction • Packing material • Greased flax, teflon(polytetrafluoroethylene), graphite • Rigid materials • Cast iron, brass, aluminum, or carbon steel
