  3. OBJECTIVES 1 1. DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF, AND AN APPRECIATION FOR, THE ADEQUATE WIRING OF THE SUCCESSFUL OPERATION OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT. 2. DEVELOP CERTAIN SKILLS IN WIRING.

  4. OBJECTIVES CONTINUED... 3. CREATE A DESIRE TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE IN THE USE OF PROPER WIRE SIZE, CIRCUIT PROTECTION, AND WIRING DEVICES WHICH CONSTITUTE A SAFE WIRING JOB. 4. INCREASE KNOWLEDGE OF ELECTRICAL USAGE WHICH WILL PROMOTE ADDITIONAL COMFORT AND LABOR SAVING EQUIPMENT IN THE HOME AND ON THE FARM. 5. PROMOTE LEADERSHIP ABILITY BY DISSEMINATING INFORMATION ON ADEQUATE AND ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT USAGE.

  5. CONTEST MAKE-UP THE CONTEST CONTAINS FIVE PARTS: 1. WRITTEN TEST ON ELECTRICITY, MOTORS, AND ELECTRICAL WIRING. 2. IDENTIFICATION OF ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS 3. WIRING DIAGRAM SHOWING CERTAIN DEVICES WIRED TO FUNCTION PROPERLY. 4. WIRE CERTAIN DEVICES ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE. 5. DESIGN A WIRING PLAN FOR A KITCHEN, UTILITY ROOM, OR SHOP.

  6. GENERAL RULES • A TEAM WILL CONSIST OF 3 OR 4 MEMBERS WHO WILL WORK INDIVIDUALLY THROUGH THE CONTEST. EACH MEMBER WILL TAKE THE WRITTEN TEST AND ONE MEMBER WILL BE RANDOMLY ASSIGNED TO ONE PRACTICUM. IT WILL BE NECESSARY FOR ALL TEAM MEMBERS TO BE COMPETENT IN ALL AREAS OF THE CONTEST. • WIRE AND DEVICES WILL BE PROVIDED. TEAM MEMBERS WILL PROVIDE THEIR OWN TOOLS. THE FOLLOWING ARE RECOMMENDED. ELECTRICIAN’S PLIERS, NEEDLENOSE PLIERS, KNIFE, WIRE STRIPPER, AND FLAT BLADE SCREWDRIVER.

  7. CONTEST FORMAT • PART 1 - GENERAL KNOWLEDGE (ALL MEMBERS) • 50, OBJECTIVE, MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS WILL BE SELECTED FROM CONTEST REFERENCES. THE TEST WILL MEASURE THE CONTESTANTS KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF BASIC ELECTRICITY, ELEC. MOTORS, WIRING, SAFETY, AND PLANNING. ALL MEMBERS WILL TAKE THE TEST.

  8. CONTEST FORMAT CONT….. • SCORING : • EACH QUESTION WILL BE WORTH 2 POINTS FOR A TOTAL OF 100 POINTS • TIME ALLOWMENT: • SIXTY (60) MINUTES WILL BE ALLOCATED FOR THE WRITTEN TEST.

  9. CONTEST FORMAT CONT. . . • PART 2 - PRACTICUMS • THIS PHASE WILL CONSIST OF FOUR PRACTICUMS. CONTESTANTS WILL PERFORM ONLY ONE PRACTICUM. • TIME: EACH PRACTICUM WILL HAVE 25 MINUTES FOR COMPLETION. • SCORING: THE MAXIMUM SCORE FOR EACH PRACTICUM WILL BE 200 POINTS. EACH WILL BE SCORED WITH ITS INDIVIDUAL PRACTICUM.

  10. PRACTICUM DESCRIPTION • PRACTICUM 1 - DIAGRAMING CIRCUITS • ONE MEMBER OF EACH TEAM WILL BE GIVEN A PROBLEM STATING HOW CERTAIN DEVICES ARE TO BE WIRED ACCORDING TO THE NEC. THE DEVICES WILL BE SHOWN AND THE CONTESTANT WILL BE ASKED TO DRAW THE CIRCUITS SHOWING THE CONNECTIONS TO EACH DEVICE SO THEY OPERATE PROPERLY. CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO SHOW THE CONNECTIONS CLEARLY AND ACCURATELY. COLORED PENCILS WILL BE PROVIDED TO REPRESENT THE DIFFERENT COLORED WIRES, AS SHOWN IN THE NEXT SLIDE.

  12. PRACTICUM 1 CONTINUED. . . • THE CONTESTANT WILL BE GIVEN 25 MINUTES TO DIAGRAM ONE OF THE FOLLOWING DEVICES: • LIGHTS AND/OR RECEPTACLES CONTROLLED BY: • A. SINGLE POLE SWITCH • THREE WAY SWITCH • FOUR WAY SWITCH

  13. CONTINUED. . . • 2. DUPLEX RECEPTACLE • 3. 240 VOLT SPECIAL PURPOSE OUTLET • 4. DOOR BELL • 5. SPLIT-WIRED (TWO CIRCUIT) RECEPTACLES - ONE OR BOTH CIRCUITS SWITCH CONTROLLED • 6. CIRCUIT FOR A 240-VOLT MOTOR

  14. CONTINUED. . . • EACH DEVICE WILL BE ALLOTED A SHARE OF TOTAL POINTS. THE CONTESTANTS WILL BE ASKED TO SHOW THE CORRECT DESCRIPTION OF WIRE: TYPE, NUMBER, CONDUCTORS, AND SIZE; EX. (NON-METALLIC SHEATHED CABLE, 2/12 W/G). THEY WILL ALSO BE ASKED TO SHOW CONNECTION OF WIRE IN THE PANEL AND SHOW THE PROPER AMPERAGE CIRCUIT BREAKER. • CREDIT WILL BE ALLOWED FOR THIS PART OF THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH THE DIAGRAM MAY BE INCORRECT. IF THE DIAGRAM IS CORRECT AND THE CIRCUIT WILL WORK, THEN ADDITIONAL POINTS WILL BE AWARDED.

  15. PRACTICUM 2 • WIRING ELECTRICAL DEVICES: • THIS PRACTICUM WILL CONSIST OF ACTUAL WIRING SOME OF THE DEVICES MENTIONED IN PRACTICUM 1. • THE CONTESTANT WILL BE FURNISHED MATERIALS TO COMPLETE THE EXERCISE.. THE WIRING EXERCISE WILL BE COMPLETED ON A WORK AREA ASSIGNED TO THE CONTESTANT. SCORING WILL BE DONE ON THE WIRING SKILLS DEMONSTRATED IN THE ALLOTED 25 MINUTES. CONTESTANTS WILL DISMANTLE THEIR OWN DEVICES WHEN SCORED, AND THE WORK AREA WILL BE LEFT CLEAN. THE CONTESTANT MUST PROVIDE HIS/HER OWN TOOLS FOR THIS PRACTICUM.

  16. PRACTICUM 3 • IDENTIFICATION OF ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS: • 25 PIECES OF EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, OR DEVICES FROM THE EQUIPMENT I.D. LIST WILL BE DISPLAYED, BY NUMBER, FOR THE CONTESTANT TO IDENTIFY. • TIME: 25 MINUTES WILL BE ALLOWED FOR THIS PRACTICUM • SCORING: 8 POINTS WILL BE GIVEN FOR EACH ITEM CORRECTLY IDENTIFIED. THE MAXIMUM SCORE FOR THIS PRACTICUM WILL BE 200 POINTS.

  17. PRACTICUM 4 • WIRING PLAN: • STUDENTS SHOULD BE PREPARED TO COMPLETE ANY THREE OF THE AREAS POSSIBLE. • THIS PHASE OF THE CONTEST WILL CONSIST OF COMPLETING A WIRING PLAN FOR ONE OF THE FOLLOWING AREAS.

  18. PRACTICUM 4 CONT. . . • UTILTIY ROOM - POSSIBLE EXAMPLES: 1. ELECTRIC WATER HEATER 2. ELECTRIC CLOTHES DRYER 3. CLOTHES WASHER 4. FOOD FREEZER 5. POWER LOUVER VENT 6. 1300 WATT ELECTRIC HEATER 7. GENERAL LIGHTING

  19. CONTINUED. . . • KITCHEN - POSSIBLE EXAMPLES: 1. FREE STANDING ELECTRIC RANGE 2. DISHWASHER 3. REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER 4. 750 WATT MICROWAVE OVEN 5. VENT HOOD 6. GARBAGE DISPOSAL 7. LIGHT OVER SINK 8. GENERAL LIGHTING
