Birmingham Science City Focus and activity • Developing a thriving Innovation Ecosystem • Collaborative projects to stimulate R&D and Innovation in specific sectors (currently Digital, Low Carbon and Innovative Healthcare) • Marketing, engaging, communicating with/ for local Innovation Community

Innovation Ecosystem • Innovation Infrastructure (inc funding) • MERCIA science parks • Innovation in future ERDF Programme • People Skills and Attitudes • Regional STEM Cohesion Group: joining up and stimulating STEM education, training and careers activity • Events eg British Science Festival, Big Bang STEM careers fair • Innovation in Business • Business Clusters WM – stimulating cross-cluster activity • Innovation Engine: Matching large organisational challenges with knowledge/ technology from SMEs and universities • Chief Technology Officers Group

Collaborative projects to stimulate specific sectors • Focus on Low Carbon, Digital and Innovative Healthcare • Underpinning R&D and centres • Co-catalysing key partner discussion around Healthy Ageing KIC • Ongoing support for Science City Research Alliance (Universies of Birmingham and Warwick) and for European Bioenergy Research Centre (Aston University) • Demand-led Demonstrators • SWARM: Small 4-Wheel fuel cell passenger vehicle applications in Regional and Municipal transport • Public sector procurement driving innovation in energy sector • Creative Digital Health Solutions

Marketing, engaging, communicating • Supporting Inward Investment • Work with MB to ensure two way flow of information • Maintaining innovation community • Thematic working groups (Low Carbon, Digital, Innovative Healthcare) meet 4x per year, public, private and HE members • Social Media - LinkedIn, Twitter, Blog – used to exchange information and views with wider community • Communication and promotion • Website • Engaging with local funders, policy makers and business; eg contribution innovation input on GBS LEP Growth Strategy • Engaging with UK funders, policy makers and business: eg regular contact with TSB.
