What school activities do you participate in? What do you know about this company / job? How is your attendance record? Do you prefer working in a team or alone? What do you plan to do after graduation? How have you handled a problem you had at work / home/ school?

Interview Do’s and Don'ts Do: Company Research Practice Be on time Dress Professional, Have Good Personal Hygiene Share your personal goals Know the goals of COE Be Honest & Positive Be inquisitive Smile Don’t: Be late Chew gum or candy Take over the interview Be too chatty Wear inappropriate clothing Let negative emotions enter the interview Miss out on asking a question or 2 Criticize others Stereotype people or jobs Forget to follow-up A thank you note is good practice and will leave a favorable impression.
  14. Timing & Word Choice I understand… or I noticed Feedback: Start with Positive: What they have done well & how it has impacted them so far How did the student perform at the interview? How can they perform better? Why wasn’t the student accepted for employment? What can I do to better prepare the student? Collaborate to come up with ideas so that the student has ownership, Talk about what those results might look like Describe objectively (without how you felt) Explain why it is an issue and how it can impact them Be specific and clear about what requires change

Things I know for sure: Ask about your district’s policy about transporting students, and procedure for fieldtrip form Plan an open house (2 dates) invite students & parents to orientation / resume workshop Have students that are NOT working keep a calendar of their effort to find employment and work with you Confirm interviews with parents (transportation and dress) Share expectations with student’s counselor and teachers You can never practice interviews too much Talk to students & parents about student’s commitment to school activities Find opportunities in the school for the COE student to assist / volunteer to develop skills Talk to the students about their feedback Make sure students are well informed about CTE and COE Have students complete tasks / learning activities until they are employed Recruit and advertise as much as possible Build a database of contacts and previous employers COE is the most rewarding job in CTE You will do great! Don’t be afraid to ask for help Trust your instincts Communicate regularly with your students
