  1. CCSM BGC Diagnostics Land Carbon Diagnostics Sub-group Co-Leads: Inez Fung and Jim Randerson

  2. IPCC AR5: 2012-2013 • Coupled carbon-climate models: standard contribution from modeling groups • 2008-2009: freeze model • 2009-2011: execute runs • 2010-2012: analyze • 2010-2011: submit for publication • 2012-2013: release AR5 report

  3. June 2006: CCSM BGC WG meeting Breckinridge • Common Path Qualifications • Carbon models (or improvements to existing models) need to be in CCSM3 and codes and runs available to committee to be evaluated • PI needs to be identified and able to improve model in the long term future • Code needs to meet computer time and code requirements for CCSM • Form a subgroup on terrestrial C diagnostics for assessing/validating C modules coupled to the CCSM

  4. 6/2005: Proposed Process for Assessing Land C Models • Start with C4MIP Phase 1 protocol (19th-20thC, prescribe SST) • Carbon Diagnostics Task Force: • C models set-up in CCSM3 framework (data ocean ?) (Lead: F. Hoffman et al.) • Define standard set of model output (Lead: • Define metrics for assessment (Lead: Schimel?) • Compile observations into format amenable for comparing with models (collab with Land WG; Lead: Running?) • PCMDI style model-model comparison (Lead: Curt Covey et al.) • Post results on BGC Diagnostics website (who? • Report on progress/results at 2006 BGC WG mtg

  5. CCSM_LandC_MIP: Models • Terrestrial carbon codes coupled to CCSM: • IBIS (coupled to PCM; Thompson et al 2004) • CASA’ (coupled to CSM1.4; Fung et al. 2005; Doney et al. 2006;), • CN (coupled to CAM3-CLM3; Thornton) • CCSM_LandC_MIP: • Climate model: CCSM3.0_BGC_f_configuration • Standard resolution: T42 (2x2.5)

  6. CCSM_LandC_MIP Expt Protocol Model Output C Obs Runs at ORNL Web display of output Format Model Output: NetCDF Climate and Forecast (CF) Metadata Convention http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/cms/eaton/cf-metadata) Compile & quality check C obs; format in CF convention Archive output in CF convention at PCMDI Archive C obs in CF at PCMDI Common Software: CDAT, Taylor diagrams... 7. Assessment: sensitivity testmodeled at Harvard Forest FCO2 (NEE) TSA SMOIST
