  3. Social Language Social language is what you use to: • Talk to your friends. • Watch TV and listen to music. • Face book and text It takes one to two years to learn social language.

  4. Academic Language Academic language is what you use to: • Understand your teachers in class. • Read textbooks. • Write essays. • Take tests. It takes five to seven years to learn social language.

READING: You read very slowly. You need pictures to help you understand. WRITING: You copy. It is difficult to write sentences.

BeginnerAsk for GUIDANCE I improved my listening by sitting with my bilingual pair in class and watching some television in English every day I improved my reading because I read in English and Spanish every day. BE PROACTIVE I improved my speaking because I made my own glossary and I’m not afraid to take a risk. I improved my writing because I sat in the front of the class and I asked for help.

  16. INTERMEDIATETime to FOCUS LISTENING: You understand some information and you like to ask for help when you don’t understand. SPEAKING: You can have short conversations about what you are doing now. READING: You read slowly and understand some information but the books in your classes are still difficult to understand. WRITING: You write short simple sentences.

  17. IntermediateTime to FOCUS BE PROACTIVE I improved my reading because I always sit with a partner who helps me understand what I am reading. I improved my listening by asking a lot of questions when I don’t understand. I am an ACTIVE listener I improved my writing because I sat in the front of the class and I asked for help. I am really working hard now to learn verbs in English-Especially in past tense. I improved my speaking because I made my own glossary and I’m not afraid to take a risk. I also ask for support from my teacher so that I can participate in class.

  20. ENGAGE to ADVANCE your English Listening: You usually understands longer directions, conversations and discussions and only occasionally asks the speaker to repeat, slow down or rephrase. Speaking: You can comfortably participate in most conversations and academic discussions or familiar topics in past present and future tenses. Reading: You can usually understand grade appropriate vocabulary. You can understand multiple meanings of commonly used words. Writing: Your writing sounds academic. Your narrations, explanations and descriptions are developed in some detail with emerging clarity.

  21. ENGAGE to ADVANCE your English BE PROACTIVE I improved my reading because I read challenging material on my own. I also understand that a dictionary is very important. I improved my listening by taking time to process so that I really understand and asking for clarification when I need it. I improved my writing because I use a dictionary at all times. It helps me increase my knowledge of academic vocabulary I improved my speaking because I challenge myself to speak in class so that I can continue to build confidence.)

  24. CHALLENGE for the ADVANCED HIGH BE PROACTIVE • Listening: I understand almost everything in English. Actually, I understand almost as much English as a native speaker. I almost never ask the speaker to slow down or rephrase. • Speaking: I am able to participate in extended discussions in social and academic settings. I communicates very effectively with a lot of vocabulary. • Reading I can read and understand vocabulary at a level nearly comparable to native English speakers. • Writing: I Use vocabulary and language structures at almost the same levels as a native speaker on academically complex and abstract ideas.

  25. CHALLENGE for the ADVANCED HIGH BE PROACTIVE I improved my reading because it is a habit. I read every day on my own. I also understand that a dictionary is very important. I improved my listening by getting involved in challenging, academic listening opportunities. I improved my speaking because I actively participate in grade appropriate academic conversation.) I improved my writing because I use a dictionary at all times. It helps me increase my knowledge of academic vocabulary

  28. What is the TELPAS reading test? • The TELPAS reading test checks how much you can read in English. This test will…….. • Check how much you can read in a Math and Science context. • Test to see what your general reading level is in English.

  29. When you take the TELPAS exam, you will see questions for ALL proficiency levels. You should try to answer all the questions even if you think they are difficult.

  30. TELPAS The test will start easy but get more difficult. Do your best on all the questions. There will be: • 11 Beginning questions • 16 Intermediate questions • 18 Advanced questions • 18 Advanced High questions.

  31. The TELPAS Reading exam tests 3 objectives: • Objective 1: Understanding words and sentences. • Objective 2: Understanding different kinds of texts • Objective 3: Analyzing and evaluating information and ideas in different kinds of texts.
