  2. Needs of Animals • Oxygen – through lungs or gills • Food – energy from eating plants, other animals, or both • Water – from drinking in lakes or ponds or from food • Shelter - protects from weather and other animals • Light • A way to dispose of wastes

  3. Inherited Traits • Examples: brown fur, long ears, ability to spin a web, ability to swim • Some are body parts: • Brown fur • Long ears • Horns • Fins • Some are behaviors: • Ability to spin a web • Ability to swim • Migrate for winter • Build a nest

  4. Adaptations of Animal Groups Mammals • Have hair or fur on their body • Breathe with lungs • Females make milk to feed their babies • Live birth • Live on land or in water • Birds • Have feathers, two wings, and two legs. • Breathe with lungs • Hatch from eggs • Live on land

  5. Adaptations of Animal Groups • Amphibians • Begin life underwater and move to land as adults • Lay eggs in water • Have smooth, moist skin • Breathe with gills at first, then lungs. Reptiles • Have dry skin covered with scales • Most lay eggs on land • Live in water or on land • Breathe with lungs • Fish • Most have skin covered with scales • Live in water • Breathe with gills • Most lay eggs

  7. The Frog Life Cycle Frogs go through a metamorphosis, or change, as they grow.

Interactions in Ecosystems • Ecosystems include populations, communities, and habitats, as well as, nonliving things like air, water, and soil. • Plants and animals depend on one another to help them meet their needs. • Interactions – food chains, food-webs, predator-prey, living and non-living • How can ecosystems be changed?

  9. Ecosystems • Forests • an area with mostly trees • receive different amounts of rainfall, sunshine, and specific temperatures • Deserts • an area with very little rainfall • some are hot and others cold

  10. Ecosystems Fresh Water Mostly found in rivers, streams, and lakes Salt Water Found in oceans, seas, and some lakes

  11. Food Chains The path of energy from one living thing to another forms a food chain. Producer Consumer Consumer Consumer Energy from the sun is used to produce sugar in plants which is then passed on to animals. Animals must consume their food from other organisms.
