14. As dictator, Hitler takes control over the German army and secretly starts rebuilding its forces. In 1939, Hitler and the German army invade the country of Poland. Hitler’s goal is to take over Europe one country at a time. World War II had begun.

15. By June 1940, Hitler and his army had swept through Europe conquering six countries, including Denmark and France.

35. Germany and the Axis Powers won most of the battles in the first half of the war. However, momentum shifted when Germany tried to invade the Soviet Union in 1942. Germany is defeated at Stalingrad and the Allies are now in control.

36. With the Allies win at Stalingrad they are now in control of the war. The Allies take back control of France and begin to advance into Germany. By 1944, Italy drops out of the war and now Germany is in retreat.

37. After Italy dropped out of the war, Russian forces advanced into Eastern Europe and Germany. Instead of facing defeat Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945.

38. As the war was coming to an end the United States requested Japan to surrender. After not responding to our requests President Harry Truman took other action. In August 1945 the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan.

39. After the first bombing Japan still did not surrender, so Truman dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. The two bombings in total killed over 200,000 Japanese citizens.

49. Throughout the 1930s Hitler and the Nazi party blamed the Jewish citizens of Germany for all of the country’s problems. Hitler stated that true Germans belonged to a “superior race”.

50. Hitler and the Nazi soldiers took Jewish property and began to send Jews and other inferior people to concentration camps. At the concentration camps the Nazi soldiers would torture and kill millions of people in numerous ways.
