West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons, has been named among the 100 most influential people in the world by the Time magazine in its 2012 list. Time said that the 57-year-old Bengal chief minister, fondly called Didi by her supporters, spent years struggling on the sidelines but finally proved to be the 'consummate politician'.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons, has been named among the 100 most influential people in the world by the Time magazine in its 2012 list. Time said that the 57-year-old Bengal chief minister, fondly called Didi by her supporters, spent years struggling on the sidelines but finally proved to be the 'consummate politician'. "Though much of Indian society remains hidebound in patriarchy and tradition, strong women still prevail in the nation's political life. Mamata Banerjee rose to the fore last year when she and a movement she built from the grassroots wrested control of her home state of West Bengal, ending three and a half decades of sclerotic communist rule," the magazine said. Lately, Mamata Banerjee's government in West Bengal has been severely chastised for arresting a professor for circulating a cartoon on the chief minister, suggesting that there should be no social contact with people associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), arresting a scientist over flimsy grounds, and dictating the choice of newspapers that should be subscribed to by state and state-aided libraries.

  2. Apart from Mamata Banerjee, advocate Anjali Gopalan, who works for rights for gays and transgendered in India through her Naz Foundation, is the only other Indian on the list which was released by Time on Wednesday.

  3. The list also includes US President Barack Obama, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and billionaire investor Warren Buffet.

  4. The 2012 list is topped by American basketball superstar Jeremy Lin, and also has sportsmen like soccer sensation Lionel Messi and world tennis number 1 Novak Djokovic.
