Asch Experiment What was this experiment testing? • The impact of the group on individual behaviourand conformity Does the subject think he might actually be wrong or is he just afraid of disapproval? Were his actions: • Informational: (distrusts his own judgment) • Normative: Wants to avoid disapproval.

Asch Experiment • How many people gave the same answer as the group knowing it was the wrong answer? 37% What impact did having a partner or one other person give the right answer have on the conformity result? Only 5% conformed. • What happened when participants were allowed to write their answers privately? • 2/3 gave the correct answer (different from the group) Conclusion: Most people conform to avoid disapproval of the group.

  9. Milgram Experiment What was being tested with the Milgram Experiment? Obedience to Authority. Will the “teacher” stop the test when he knows he is hurting someone or continue because the authority figure is encouraging him to do so?

  10. Milgram Experiment What % of people conformed to an unjust or inhumane command from the authority figure. Approx. 65% Subject was told he was not “responsible” for what happened. What sorts of things/ events does this help us better understand?
