  1. Bellringer Feb. 25 – SIT DOWN. Get your CSET draft for “Part-Time Indian” With the colored pencil at your seat, make a box around your claim which answers the question: How does Sherman Alexie set up the main character and the problem he faces? If you didn’t complete the draft last class – what did you do for 85 minutes of class? That is ridiculous. Complete a pink slip– I attached it to your work. Substitute work is counted and it is part of the unit. Now we are further behind and you will have more homework to do.

  2. Now, on your own paper and without talking. 1. Find the quotation marks and color them in using your colored pencil “……..” (JUST THE MARKS). 2. THEN, find where you TALKS about the quotation. Underline those words, phrases, or sentences. 3. READ what you have underlined. Does it match up with the claim which is boxed in? If it doesn’t write a note in the margin telling the classmate to TALK about how the EVIDENCE fits the claim. 4. LAST STEP – go back to the Set up – it should be the sentence(s) after the claim and before the quotations start. It should have no marks on it. This is where you told us what kind of person Junior is (the inference) and what his problems are. Star the word which tells you the inference and star each of the three problems.

  3. Your REVISED CSET is due next class – Feb.27. • You will submit both the revised copy and the colored draft. • If you think your colored draft is perfect, turn it in now. BUT, you won’t have the opportunity to revise it if you don’t like your grade. AND if all you do is recopy the colored draft and call that a revision, you won’t be able to revise it either. That’s just changing the FONT, not revision.

  4. MOVING ON TO…. POETRY which you should have started last class. • Poetry is more concise than prose. You have to use fewer words to get across your message. You have to be precise to create your effects. • YOU SHOULD HAVE read the two poems – “Legal Alien” by Pat Mora and “Negro Hero” by Gwendolyn Brooks.

  5. Close Reading • Let’s read “Legal Alien” together. While we’re reading, I want you to mark up your copy of the poem. Look at HOW Pat Mora is getting across her WHAT. • Remember stylistic elements – types of words, figurative language, types of sentences, tone, types of STANZAS… • At the top of the page, write what her message is about being a minority in the US.

  6. Pd 8

  7. PD 4

  8. Now, on your own - • Read “Negro Hero” and answer the close reading questions. • Write at the top of the page what Brooks’ message is about being a minority in the US. • Now, on your own, respond to the poetry response question. You must talk about the evidence in terms of what stylistic device both poets use (style – remember the style chart from Part-Time Indian?)
