  2. Nike’s labour problems • In 1991 Nike starts to notice that some of their contracted factories are not providing enough for the workers and most of them are working in poor conditions. • In 1996 Nike finally establishes a department that works in the factories of different countries to improve the lives of the labourers. • In 1998 they have problems with the media and need to change the way that they produce their products quickly. • In 1999 they partner with the Fair Labour Association to help with the inspections of factories.

  3. How does Nike prevent child labour? Nike has developed a system that inspects the factories that are making their products. The Fair Labour Association (FLA) inspects Nike's contracted factories. In the factory they look at how safe the environment is for the workers and if there is any child labor. If there is anything that is not good for the workers they will then try to fix the problem. They have found that many of the workers did not have legal work permits, a proper wage and some were abused in the factories. Over 2 years with the program, the number of factories that had not been known of their condition has decreased from 48% to only 8%. In this time they have raised the minimum age to work for Nike and increased the wages for the workers. The amount of violations to their standards has only been 5% of the factories in 5 years.

  4. Difficulties with ending child labour • There are still many factories which may have child labour, so Nike would have to inspect many times to make sure the lives of the labourers are going well and that they aren’t sick or in danger. • They are not fully 100% clear of any unacceptable things done in the factories, therefore they would have to work harder to end all of these problems.

  5. Questions about their plans • How long will it take until everything is fixed? • Couldn’t they just hire a manager that can monitor the factories environment? • Why doesn’t Nike build more of their own factories instead of getting a bunch of contractors from different countries? • How would children benefit from these plans if no one else in their family could work? • How can Nike make the contractor’s factory safer and not have it collapse like its previous buildings?
