  6. Responsibilities • Make education a top priority • Treat everyone with respect • Attend all classes and be on time • Complete all assignments • Prepare for exams • Be on time (did we mention that already?)

Exams • AP Exams – May 2 – 13 • In School Exams – June 17th & 20th • Provincial Exams – June 21st – 29th • Schedules are listed in students’ agenda planner • Grade 12 Exams count for 40% of the final mark • Only English 12 or Communications 12 have compulsory final exams – all other provincial exams are optional • Final marks issued by the ministry at the end of August

  8. GRADUATION What You Need to Graduate • A minimum of 80 credits (4 credits = one course) • 48 credits are from required courses • 28 credits are from elective courses • 4 credits are from Graduation Transitions

  9. Required Courses (12 courses) -English 10, 11 and 12 (Comm 11, 12) -Social Studies 10 and 11 -Mathematics 10, Mathematics 11 or 12 -Science 10 & Science 11 -Physical Education 10 -Fine Arts or Applied Skills 10, 11 or 12 -Planning 10

Provincial Exams • Grade 10 Exams - (20% of the final grade) -English 10, Math 10 & Science 10 • Grade 11 – (20% of the final grade) -Social Studies 11 • Grade 12 – (40% of the final grade) -English 12 or Communications 12 -Other Provincial Exams in Grade 12 are optional and depend on the courses taken

POST SECONDARY General Entrance Requirements • Math 11 & English 12 • At least one academic Science 11 (Biology, Physics, Chemistry or Earth Science) • At least 3 other approved academic courses at the grade 12 level • Note that provincial exams for grade 12 courses other than English 12 are now optional • If you write optional provincial exams, UBC & SFU will consider the higher grade – school mark only or blended (school mark + exam)

General Entrance Requirements (continued) • A second language (grade 11 level) is required for direct university admission in British Columbia • All other requirements will vary depending on the post secondary institution • The most accurate information is available online on the university websites • Please see the links we have listed on the Student Services section of our school website

  13. Meeting the English Language Requirement • This will vary according to the college or university. Requirements and necessary web links are clearly outlined on the post secondary website. • Some examples of ways to meet this requirement: -obtain a high enough grade on the provincial exam portion of English 12 -write the LPI -write the TOEFL

Entrance Applications • Douglas College – October 15th • Langara – October 1st • Kwantlen Polytechnic University – Nov 1 • For all other post secondary institutions, please refer to their websites for application admission dates • College applications are ‘first come, first served’ • Visit www.pas.bc.ca to begin common applications

Post Secondary Institutions Selections Form • Allows graduating students to select which post-secondary institutions will receive copies of interim marks in May and/or their transcripts at the end of July • Must be completed online at www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/ • Students must make selections by June 30th • Instructions will be available on the school website as well as in Student Services

  18. GRADUATION TRANSITIONS • 30+ hours of Work/Volunteer Experience • 150 minutes of physical activity/week • A Healthy Living Plan (due Oct 29/2010) • A Transition Plan (due Jan 14/2011) • An Exit Interview Students MUST complete all of the following components:

  22. SCHOLARSHIPS Types of Scholarships Available • Ministry Sponsored • Post-Secondary Institutions • Private Organizations • School Sponsored

  23. Ministry Sponsored • Graduation program Examination Scholarships ($1000) - “Final mark of “B” in English 12 plus 86% on 3 provincial exams - AP exams (score of 4 or 5) can also be used in place of provincial exams • No application necessary

  24. Ministry Sponsored • Dogwood District Authority Awards ($1000) • Superior achievement in Fine Arts, Applied Skills, Physical Education or Secondary Languages • Apply during May 2011 • Passport to Education ($500 for Grade 12)

  25. Post Secondary Institutions • Entrance scholarships vs. Major Scholarships • Many scholarships are conditional • Emphasis on the “well-rounded” person • Bursaries: based on financial need

  26. Private Organizations • From various community organizations (eg. TD Canada Trust, Rotary Club, CGA) • Emphasis is on community involvement • Others interest in a particular career area

  27. School Sponsored • Awards donated to the school for a variety of reasons • Some are specific to departments • Memorial scholarships • Parent Advisory Council Awards

  28. Getting Ready to Apply • Prepare or update your resume • References (at least two weeks notice) • Submit Student Profile and Teacher Reports (required for internal scholarships) • Be on top of things – be aware of deadlines and requirements

Dinner & Dance • To be invited to attend: - students must be passing a minimum of 68 credits by Term 2 - students must have fewer than 60 unexcused absences • Formal evening • Tentatively held at Vancouver Convention Centre • Friday, June 24th, 2011 from 6 pm to 12 am • Cost: $100 • Parents are invited to attend the beginning of the evening. Times to be announced.

  34. Dry After Grad • June 25th, 12 am • Sponsored by Parent Advisory Committee • Event details to be determined by the committee • Parent volunteers are needed for fundraising, organizing the event, etc. • Student chairpersons are Sarah Corrigan and Bernice Tsoi

  35. School Leaving Ceremonies • Friday, May 27th, 2011 at 7pm • Bill Copeland Centre • Cost is $65 and includes 2 tickets • Additional tickets are $5 each • Cost includes grad gown rental and purchase of souvenir cap and tassel and graduation folder
