AIDS United Regional Organizing • The purpose of the AIDS United Regional Organizing Initiativeis to advance the National HIV/AIDS Strategy goals of reducing HIV incidence; increasing access to care and improvement of health outcomes for people living with HIV/AIDS;uniquely positioned to organize and effectively mobilize grassroots and grasstops advocacy at the state and federal levels around HIV/AIDS issues. Through collaborating with state and regional partners and stakeholders, AIDS United will develop, implement, and direct a coordinated national organizing strategy that takes us closer to our overall mission of ending HIV/AIDS in the United States.

  4. Why Now? Now is a great time to build enthusiasm surrounding IAC and HIV issues at stake for Election 2012. It is important that the things we learn surrounding Election 2012 and at IAC are communicated to our communities.

  5. First thing is first!!! • Before we try to begin with engaging voters aboutissues that affect the HIV/AIDS community we have to make sure they are REGISTERED!!! • Most deadlines for registration are about 30 days prior to Election. Individuals who have recently become married, selectivily changed namesor moved must Re- Register. www.declareyourself.com

  6. Educate & Mobilize Voters • Within your organization if you have the capacity to hold forums to discuss the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS policy do it! • Find out each candidates stand on issues that are important to you. • Find out where the campaign will stop near your area and if they holding a town hall meeting. If so, organize a group who will go and raise HIV/AIDS targeted questioning. • These things can be done as an organization or as a group of individuals.

  7. Educating and mobilizing voters continued • Inform your group and newly registered voters that they cannot vote one time and stop. Most of the issues that affect your every day quality of life start on the local level. They MUST vote for mayors, governors, congressmen and senators that will work in Tandem with the Federal Government on HIV/AIDS targeted issues.

  8. Organizing around Election 2012 • As an Individual • Get informed about HIV/AIDS policy issues that effect your region. • Seek non-partisan news sources. • Share with your family and friends about what you have learned & what they need to vote. • Help arrange rides when it is time to vote or go to a town hall meetings. • Encourage others to volunteer and connect with organizations that are mobilizing and engaging in election activities. • As an Organization • Create a voter registration space in your facility • Create a social media presence to encourage people to vote & a conversation presence during debates that will offer perspectives in support or opposition to a candidates stance on key issues. • Educate your network on the National HIV/AIDS strategy as a reminder of what they should be looking for in a candidate. • Know the rules of engagement to what you can and cannot do during Elections.

  9. Organizing around IAC As an Individual As an Organization Set up a group that will meet with your senator to maximize your time near The Hill during IAC. Create Mini-HUBS for individuals that are unable to attend IAC. They can coincide or happen anytime between 7/23- 12/31. These HUBS can be catered to addressing the needs of your organization. • Connect with an organization that plans to be apart of a demonstration during their time in DC. • If you cannot attend ask how you can volunteer to assist with organizing efforts prior to IAC. • Attend a conference HUB that may be taking place in your area, or organize one if there isn’t one. www.aids2012.org apply starting March 14th. • Help with fundraising initiatives of individuals or organizations that are raising money to attend IAC. • Link to a group making a Hill visit , if you cannot make it to DC do a follow up call.
