  1. Stars and Galaxies

  2. The closest star to us • The sun

  3. A cluster of stars • A galaxy is a cluster of stars together

  4. The universe • The universe is everything in space

  5. The different types of universes

  6. Stars make up galaxies which make up the universe

  7. The different types of galaxies • Draw three boxes each with a title and a picture of the galaxy in the box Irregular Galaxy Elliptical Galaxy Spiral Galaxy

  8. What makes one star different from another? • Mass determines lifespan of star • Flame demonstration: predict on left side order from coolest to hottest. (orange, white, yellow, red, blue)

  9. The color of a star tells its surface temperature • Remember: ROYWB • A star’s color tells you how hot its surface is. From coolest to hottest: • Red, orange, yellow, white, blue

  10. Size of stars

  11. A star is born Nebulas- dust and debris collecting in space

  12. Protostar • Star is being formed from nebula dust and debris

  13. Star is formed=main sequence

  14. Dying star

  15. Super nova • Explosion moving at about 6 million mph!! OR

  16. White dwarf star  Black dwarf star

  17. A star has died

  18. Neutron Star or Black Hole? Black Hole If the star is at least 9 or more times larger than the Sun, the core will continue to collapse into a black hole, an extremely dense area with a strong gravitational pull that light can not escape. • Neutron Star • If the star is at least 1.5 but less than 9 times larger than the Sun, the core left after the supernova will collapse into a neutron star. This is a star composed only of neutrons.

  19. Types of Galaxies – Quasars… • A quasar is a distant galaxy with a black hole at its center. • As enormous amounts of gas revolve around a black hole, the gas heats up and shines brightly.

  20. See board • Diagram of Stars life

  21. Life cycle of a star (no dwarfs here)
