  10. Guest Author Event at Oak View Middle School: • ENHANCED INSTRUCTION BY ACCESSING LEARNING RESOURCES/EXPERTS FROM OUTSIDE THE DISTRICT • All school reading of Black Duck by Janet Taylor Lisle

  11. Participant Reaction: • “I thought that it was pretty cool. It was a good experience for us to talk to a famous person. She was a nice lady and I think she enjoyed it as much as we did.” Student - Karlie G.“I thought it was fun because we could talk to the author from another state with our class computer.” Student - Martin C.“I thought it was really cool to be able to see and talk to the writer. It was like meeting Ruben because she made him. It was fun to see her.” Student - Garrett M.“I think it was cool. I wanted to know more about her before this and now I know. It was cool to put a face to the book.” Student - Austin M.“The conference was cool. The main things was that she was talking to us and it was our first time talking to an author. You also got a feeling for how she did her research.” Student - Emmanuel E.

  12. Participant Reaction: • The kids thought it was so neat that an actual author talked with us and shared herself so openly and in her own home.  They thought that was great!! Thanks again for this!!  What a memorable experience for all!! Classroom Teacher • I have heard many positive comments from my students about this experience. Especially from the class that was actually involved with being able to ask the questions. They were thrilled that they could actually see her, the artwork, and the other students. This experience made the book very “real” and the atmosphere was charged with excitement for much of the day! Classroom Teacher

  13. Participant Reaction: • Dear Tom,  I had never participated in a video conference of any kind before.  Oakview's suggestion that we might put such a thing together as a culmination of its school community-wide reading of BLACK DUCK, seemed daunting at first.  Setting up the technical side was pleasantly easy, however.  The program seemed solid, you were an excellent guide, in the end I was able to relax and really enjoy talking with the students.    The idea of being able to travel this way, via my computer screen, to distant schools is a truly exciting one.  There's no doubt in mind that, while no substitute for an in-person author visit, video programs like WebEX could become a powerful means of connecting authors and readers.  Thanks so much for giving me a first taste of this wonderful experience.    Author - Janet Taylor Lisle

  14. Veterans Day Program – Sandburg Middle School • Mike Whitaker – Iraq War Veteran ABCNewspapers - Friday, Nov. 20, 2009

  15. Participant Reaction: • One of the best things about our Veteran’s Day WebEx experience was that the students were more engaged and focused during the presentation then they would have been in a large group setting. Not only were they more comfortable viewing the presentation from the classroom, they were excited about the opportunity to talk directly to the speaker in front of their peers. The small group setting allowed them to really focus on the speaker, and not be shy about asking questions. Thank you Classroom Teacher

  16. Anoka-Hennepin Alumni/Student Connection • Working with distinguished graduates • Cover Letter: • Name,I am contacting a number of Anoka-Hennepin alumni to see if they would be willing to share their experiences with our current students. It is great to see so many of our graduates move on to exciting and distinguished professional careers. We want our students to dream big and see evidence that those dreams can become reality. Would you be interested in connecting with some of our course name students using audio/video conferencing over the Internet? We have access to Cisco WebEx web conferencing services. I am trying to pair graduates with appropriate classes in our schools. For example: • a Blaine High School grad working as a Software Engineer for eBay talking with Computer Programming classes; • a Coon Rapids High School grad working as a Research Zoologist with the Smithsonian talking with Science classes; • a Coon Rapids High School graduate working as a Professor of Material Science at the University of California Irvine talking with Physics classes. • Please let me know if you would be willing to participate. I know our students would benefit from the experience.

  17. Tele-Teaching Staff • DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION FOR HOMEBOUND STUDENTS • Visual challenges of teaching Geometry remotely • Physical challenges due to the medical condition of a student

  18. Participant Reaction: • Working with a high school geometry student:WebEx has been a great tool for me.  I was able to draw pictures that my student could see so I could explain how to set up and solve a geometry proof.  I was able to write out, in real time, equations and sentences that helped her better understand the concepts I was teaching.  I also had the ability to call up a document that was stored on my computer and share it with her, marking it up as I went.   Homebound Teacher • Working with a high school biology student with cerebral palsy: My student had recently had  surgery on her hip and legs. She is currently in a wheel chair. She struggles with control of her hands. I have found the WebEx program very useful for her situation. Our biology textbook is available to students online. I share the browser and she can see what I want to discuss. There are links to virtual labs/quizzes/brain pop short movies and many more hyperlinks that I can access quickly. Since I control the browser and what she sees, we can accomplish much more than if she were trying to navigate through the web resources. Thanks for providing the service! Homebound Teacher

  19. Participant Reaction: • I just wanted to let you know how much I think the the WebEx helps with my daughter Niki, home based schooling.  I know from personal experience how difficult it can be to try to help someone over the phone, when you are dependant on them telling you what they are looking at instead of actually seeing yourself.  WebEx and other Remote Control tools are ideal for overcoming these issue so everyone is looking at the same thing, and can see the visual cues that are lost with only oral communications. It is good to know that the district is actively using the technologies available to help improve the quality of education provided. Thanks, Parent

  20. AP Art History Proposal • DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION ACROSS BUILDINGS FOR LOW-INCIDENCE COURSES • The course has traditionally had 5 to 10 registrations per high school. Not enough students to justify the offering at each of our 5 high schools. • A sub-committee of our Secondary Technology Best Practice Committee has been formed to investigate the feasibility of offering courses across buildings. • Delivery Method • Technology Tools • Staffing • Scheduling • Sustainability • Capacity For Growth

  21. Our high schools have Wednesday morning shared PLC collaboration time. Not all teachers have peers in their building teaching the same class. Teachers of these low-incidence courses (Physics, Psychology, …) needed a way to connect and collaborate. • SUPPORT FOR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES (PLC’s) • PLC Audio-Video Conferencing with WebEx Sharing classroom presentations Sharing classroom activities and more…

  22. Participant Reaction: • WebEx has become an instrumental part of our PLC…I have been able to talk with the other psychology teachers from Anoka, Coon Rapids, and Champlin. Previously, we have only been able to meet on a limited bases due to time, costs, and location. We have effectively used the sharing tool with documents, PowerPoints, and web sites. We have been able to work on all of these things at the same time in real time. As a result, we have accomplished more in these last few months of using WebEx, than we have in the previous months.  Jeff • I think WebEx is an excellent tool for teachers to use to collaborate with one another.  For the first time, we as psychology teachers have been able to have the live, real time discussions that other teachers have had for the last year.  The ability to have classes collaborate with one another or collaborate with a student from somewhere else or a professional in the field is intriguing.  I look forward to what WebEx will be able to do for me professionally and instructionally for my students.   Aimee

  23. Participant Reaction: • The availability of WebEx made it possible for us to actually have a workable PLC this year. Prior to the use of WebEx, all of us were somewhat randomly placed in a PLC within our building that really had no connection to physics. Although we could add teaching ideas, the topics covered really had no direct connection to physics. With the advent of the WebEx tool we were able to start actually working on physics issues. I think this is a relatively painless way to solve the problem of singleton teachers not having colleagues in their building. An investment in the tool will be well spent. Tim • WebEx has allowed the physics group to collaborate and bring ideas together.  With only one physics teacher per building it’s impossible to share information effectively.  Email, for example, is a challenge since you can’t share specific equations, diagrams, and formulas. It is too time intensive to copy and paste diagrams or find the right symbols.  With WebEx we can use draw tools to share the ideas efficiently. Linda

  24. Participant Reaction: • I’m a singleton in the district in terms of teaching content.  When our district made PLC’s mandatory, I was placed with teachers who don’t teach the same topics at the same level here at my school.  It wasn’t  the most productive time for me. It was frustrating to know there were others in the same predicament at other schools. When WebEx was introduced to our group, we were able to talk and share documents with each other.  Our most valuable and useful time is when we can converse and collaborate together.  In years past, that happened once or twice a year.  Now we can get together once a week. It works out great.Dave
