  1. Modern Japan China and Japan Notes: Day 2

  2. Why did Japan bomb Pearl Harbor? • By 1941 the Japanese, at the height of their power, saw war between themselves and the U.S. as inevitable. Reasons… 1. The U.S. had cut off oil and many other exports to Japan amidst the war because of their actions with China and Germany. • 80% of Japan’s oil at the time was from the U.S. 2. The U.S. had also been putting troops in the Philippines for years, something the Japanese saw as a threat. 3. Finally, the U.S. moved their main naval base from San Diego to Pearl Harbor. • All of these things the Japanese perceived as a threat. • The U.S. (mistakenly) assumed the Japanese would attack the Philippines first, and weren’t strong enough to attack twice!

  3. Mini Debate • Were the Japanese wrong to attack Pearl Harbor?

  4. What happened to Japan after the Atomic Bomb? • Japan is controlled by the U.S. from 1945 to 1951. • U.S. allows them to keep Hirohito, the Emperor during WWII. • Japan’s right to wage war is taken away (self-imposed). • Still in effect today! • The U.S. and Japan have been great allies since. • Major economic partners, heavy trading between both countries.
