  1. Chapter 4 Lesson 1

  2. Today You Need: • 4.1 Notes handout (glued in on the right side!) • Pencil or pen • 3 colored pencils, pens, or highlighters

  3. What is Matter? Right Side • Anything that has MASS and takes up SPACE • Examples of matter? • The smallest unit of matter is the ATOM

  4. “Atom” Right Side • From the Greek word atoma, meaning “INDIVISIBLE”.

  5. Think – Write - Left Side • From the Greek word atoma, meaning “indivisible”. • Using this definition, predict why the atom was called the atom. • {Complete Sentences!}

  6. Pair – Write Left Side • Share with your partner. • Write down their thoughts in a new color.

  7. “Atom” Right Side • From the Greek word atoma, meaning “indivisible”. • Greek Philosopher Democritus could believed that you could only cut matter up a certain amount of times before it was too small to be divided.

  8. Parts of the Atom Right Side • All Atoms are mostly EMPTY SPACE surrounding a tiny NUCLEUS. • “subatomic particles” – particles that are SMALLER than an atom • There are 3 main subatomic particles. • Protons, Neutrons, Electrons

  9. Protons Right Side • Use your first color to highlight or shade behind the word “Protons” on your handout. • Symbol: P+ • Charge: + 1 • Mass ~ 1 amu

  10. Units Left Side • What units do we use for measuring distance? • What units do we use for measuring mass?

  11. Units Right Side Left Side • What units do we use for measuring distance? • Inches, centimeters, miles, kilometers, yards… • What units do we use for measuring mass? • Pounds, ounces, grams • amu: ATOMIC MASS UNIT = for measuring mass

  12. Neutrons Right Side • Use your 2nd color to highlight or shade behind the word “Neutrons” on your handout. • Symbol: N • Charge: 0 (Neutrons are Neutral) • Mass ~ 1 amu

  13. Electrons Right Side • Use your 3rd color to highlight or shade behind the word “Electrons” on your handout. • Symbol: e- • Charge: - 1 • Mass ~ 0 amu

  14. AMU repeat Right Side • What is amu? • Atomic mass unit • Use to measure mass of subatomic particles.

  15. Create a Chart Left Side • Create a chart that shows the symbol, charge, and mass (amu)

  16. Create a Chart Left Side • Create a chart that shows the symbol, charge, and mass (amu)

  17. Lithium Atom:3P+, 4N, 3 e- Right Side • Use your 3 colors: • 1 color for Protons, P+ • 2nd color for Neutrons, N • 3rd color for electrons, e-

  18. Draw a new atom Left Side • Draw Berylium, Be • Be has 4 protons, 4 electrons, and 5 neutrons. • Don’t forget to color-code the subatomic particles.
