  2. Composition of a Hydrate Hydrates are: • Ionic compounds that have water as part of their structure. • Purpose: to determine the formula of copper(II)sulfate hydrate

  3. Materials • Porcelain evaporating dish

  4. Materials • Crucible Tongs

  5. Materials • Microspatula

  6. Materials • Ring stand apparatus with Bunsen Burner.

  7. Materials • Copper(II)Sulfate hydrate

  8. Safety Precautions: • Copper sulfate is a dangerous chemical • Wear apron • Wear safety goggles • Wash hands • Keep hands away from face

  9. Procedure • Heat dish with hottest part of flame For 3 minutes. (NO CHEMICAL) • Using crucible tongs, remove dish and let cool. (ON THE COUNTER) • Find the mass of COOLED empty dish. • Measure out a quantity of copper sulfate between 1.00 and 1.50 grams.

  10. Procedure • Gently heat dish + chemical • Avoid decrepitation • Increase heat and continue until Copper sulfate turns gray-white. • Microspatula may be used to “spread out” chemical.

  11. Procedure • Allow dish to cool for about a minute. • Using crucible tongs, find the mass of the anhydrate.
