  4. Origin of the state's name • State is named after the Mississippi river • Mississippi comes from the French "Messipi" – a rendering of the Anishinaabe name for the river, "Misi-ziibi," meaning "Great River." • Nickname: Magnolia state

  9. Crazy laws • Vagrancy is punishable by either 30 days in prison or a $201 fine. • In Temperance, MS, you can't walk a dog without dressing it in diapers. • Cattle rustling is punishable by hanging. • Columbus: The fine for waving a gun in public is higher than actually shooting it.
