  1. THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE FOOD WE EAT An informational book for children

  2. This is Martin the genetically modified carrot. This is Jim the organic carrot.

  3. Jim grew up on a farm with a great deal of other vegetables and fruits. His caretakers (or carrotakers) had to spend a lot of time in the fields making sure each plant had the healthiest soil and used the best compost.

  4. His carrotakers refused to use chemicals or other harsh materials on Jim and his buddies. These chemicals were known to make other carrots sick.

  5. Instead, Jim and his friends were grown in a more natural, environmentally friendly manner. Although there are not as many of them and they can only be grown during certain times of the year……

  6. They are healthier, more nutritious, and the production of them is better for the environment.

  7. Now, Martin had a different type of experience than Jim. He was grown on a large commercial farm with a huge amount of friends just like him. Martin and his friends were constantly doused with pesticides and harmful fertilizers.

  8. They were told by their carrottakers that they would stay preserved longer, and wouldn’t be prone to disease if they used these chemicals on them.

  9. Some of Martins friends were even genetically modified so they had different traits such as color and taste. The carrots were constantly being told that this way of farming would provide more food to people and make the commercial farm more money.

  10. These genetically modified foods were changed before they were fully developed. Specific parts of their DNA were removed and changed to enhance their growth and development. Once they were fully grown they were cross bread with other carrots so they would take on the same traits.

  11. While Jim and Martin were both carrots, they were each grown in two different ways, exhibiting differences in characteristics. Jim went on to be sold at an organic Whole Foods Martket and Martin ended up with some of his buddies at Wal-Mart.
