  2. Early Years • Born 1856 • Grew up as a slave • Went to Hampton school • Booker believed all races can be equal

  3. Family Life • Family lived in a large cabin in Virginia • Booker had a brother and a sister he helped get through school • Booker was married 3 times

  4. Important Contributions • Booker and his family were finally free but didn’t always have a better life • He wrote a book about his life, called Up From Slavery. • He enjoyed taking care of his garden, fishing, riding his horse and sharing his dreams with others.

  5. Other Interesting Facts We Learned • Booker was a slave • Booker had a bad houseand grew up poor • Gave a very important speech in Atlanta • Believed all races could all work together • He was a leader and a very powerful man • In 1900 he started the National Negro Business League.
