  1. Character Analysis Outlines Ms. Hier 2011-2012

  2. Why create an outline? • Organize your information • Easily see where you’re missing quotations or ideas. • Provide a map for yourself before writing.

  3. So…what goes in the outline? • First things first, your thesis statement begins the outline! • Why? Because the entire outline supports your thesis statement and a reader must know what you’re supporting before reading the evidence. • After your thesis statement, you must list your three supporting points. • The first part of your outline will look like this: I. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck created Lennie and George together to show the bond even in hard times. • Lennie and George travel together • George protects Lennie • George takes care of Lennie

  4. Roman Numeral II • This part of your outline breaks down support point number one. • You must include at least three quotations to support the point. YOU MUST CITE THE QUOTATION!! • Provide your own ideas that tie the quotation to your point. • You must include at least THREE quotations in each support point. • Only TWO quotations can be from the novel. The other one must be from an article you printed. • This section of your outline will look like this:

  5. Breaking down your first point Your 1st point II. George and Lennie travel together • “For a moment the place was lifeless, and then two men emerged from the path and came into the opening by the green pool” (Steinbeck 2). • George and Lennie are the two men • They’ve been traveling for hours B. “When his Aunt Clara died, Lennie just come along with me workin’” (Steinbeck 40). • George took Lennie in • Lennie and George work together C. “So we sit in a irrigation ditch… all the rest of that day. … An’ that night we scrammed outa there” (Steinbeck 10). • They planned to lynch Lennie • Both men escaped Quotation from novel or article CITATION!! These are your ideas. You will talk about these in your paper.

  6. Breaking down the second point…in case you missed it the first time. (Roman numeral III) 2nd point III. George protects Lennie and gives him dreams A. “…portraying dreams, friendships, and grim necessities…” (McCarthy). • Takes him away from Auburn • Gives Lennie hope B. “The ranch provides another kind of security and also a place for dreams…” (McCarthy). • Both men work • Lennie talks about their dream C. “The river bank and the ranch provide on one level the idyllic and real boundaries of their world. The centrally placed bunkhouse and barn, offering only physical security…” (McCarthy). • The barn is home • Riverbank is safe space Quotation from novel or article CITATION!! These are your ideas. You will talk about these in your paper.

  7. HEY! YOU! Here’s a third example of breaking down a point or Roman Numeral IV 3rd point IV. George takes care of Lennie • “The river bank scene is at least suggestive of life-in-nature, a level Lennie is not too far above. The river bank is reassuringly peaceful until George fires the luger and destroys friend and dream.” (McCarthy) • Tells him to go back to the river • Saves him from Curley • “George and Lennie symbolize something of the enduring and hopeful…” (McCarthy). • Dream of the farm • Candy and Crooks want to help • The fundamental symbol is the dream itself a little house and a couple of acres an' a cow and some pigs and ... which keeps the two men together, stimulates hope for two others, and very likely expresses the hopes of still others. (McCarthy). • Lennie wants rabbits • George wants independence Quotation from novel or article CITATION!! These are your ideas. You will talk about these in your paper.

  8. Conclusion: the last Roman Numeral (V) • In this section, you must re-state your thesis statement. Word it differently than the thesis in the first section! • List your three points. • See below: V. George and Lennie’s relationship was created to show a strong bond in Of Mice and Men. • Traveling together • George protects Lennie • George cares for Lennie
