SPI 0807.Inq.1 Controls and Variables Bell work Feb 05, 2013 • A student conducts an experiment to determine which type of • ballpoint writing pen will last the longest before running out of ink. • Experimental Group • (A) Uses 3 types of ink pens in a series of experiments • (Blue ink pen, Black ink pen, red ink pen) • He copies text from his science book. He copies the same text over • and over. He writes at the same speed. The room temperature • remains the same. He writes on the same kind of paper. • Control Group • (B) Uses 3types of non-ballpoint pens in a series of experiments • Uses the same constants as the experimental group • Identify the following: • (1) Independent and dependent variable(s) in the experimental group • (2) Constants 1

SPI 0807.Inq.1 Controls and Variables Bell work Experimental group (A) All the details of the series of experiments using the 3 types of ballpoint pens Control group (B) All the details of the 3 non-ballpoint pens Independent and Dependent variables -Independent: The types of ballpoint pens (blue, black, red) -Dependent: How long the ink lasts from each pen These are some constants -Same text, same person writing, same writing speed, same temperature, same kind of paper, etc. NOTE: The non-ballpoint pens are the control variables! 2

B) Chew 3 different pieces of gum. Measure the mass of the gum before and after you chew them. C) Record your observations in a chart D) Write a conclusion E) Identify independent and dependent variable(s) F) Identify the constants G) Think of a control experiment you could do and describe it 4
