  2. About Me • Francesco Petrarch • Born July 20, 1304 in Arezzo • Died on July 19, 1374 • Pietro di Parenzo di Garzo was is father • His father died in 1326

  3. Family • He had a brother name Gherardo • He had 2 children • One of his children's name are Giovanni • His other child name is  Francesca • Giovanni died by the plague in Avignon in 1361 • Francesca was Petrarch's 2 born • Francesca had 2 of her own children later on

  4. Background • In 1316 he went to study in Montpellier with his brother • Shortly after in 1319 his mother died • In 1320 he went to study law in bologna • In 1326 Petrarch abandons his study of law and turns to the classics of which he studied in small amounts during his schooling • Him and his brother enter the service of the chruch

  5. Major work • Petrarch wrote hundreds of poems about a girl name Laura de Noves • In 1336 he begins to compile RerumVulgariumFragmenta also called the Song Book • When Petrarch dies the Song Book has 366 poems, mostly sonnets

  6. Familiares • In 1345 Verona Petrarch discovers a collection of letters written by Cicero and collected by him over 1000 years ago • Petrarch begins to follow Cicero's lead and starts a collection of his own letters which he called Familiares • His Familiares will end up being a collection of 350 letters in 24 books spanning from 1325 to 1366. • Petrarch would terminate Familiares years later and begin Seniles

  7. Final moments • Petrarch would live out the rest of his life in Italy • Still in the service of the church and going on diplomatic missions from time to time • On the morning of July 19, 1374, a day before his birthday, Francesca walked in to Petrarch’s study and found him slumped over on his desk with a pen in his hand • He was buried in Parish church
