  1. PROBLEM-SOLVING STRATEGIES 7TH GRADE MATH

  2. DRAW A PICTURE • When problems involve objects, distances, or places you can draw a picture to make the problem easier to understand. • You will often use your picture to solve the problem.

  3. USE CONCRETE MODELS • If a problem involves objects, you can sometimes make a model using (or drawing) those objects to act out the problem.

  4. GUESS AND CHECK • If you do not know how to solve a problem, you can always make a guess. • Then check your guess using the information in the problem. • Use the result to make a better guess. • Repeat until you find the correct answer.

  5. WORK BACKWARDS • Some problems give you a sequence of information and ask you to find something that happened at the beginning. • To solve a problem like this, you may want to start at the end of the problem and work backwards.

  6. FIND A PATTERN • In some problems, there is a relationship between different pieces of information. • Examine this relationship and try to find a pattern. • You can then use this patter to find more information and the solution to the problem.

  7. MAKE A TABLE • When you are given a lot of information in a problem, it may be helpful to organize that information. • One way to organize information is to make a table.

  8. SOLVE A SIMPLER PROBLEM • Sometimes a problem contains large numbers or requires many steps. • Try to solve a simpler problem that is similar. • Solve the simpler problem first, and then try the same steps to solve the original problem.

  9. DETERMINE A REASONABLE ANSWER • In some problems, it is possible to find the correct answer by determining which answers could make sense in the situation. • Estimate or use mental math skills to determine a reasonable answer.

  10. ACT IT OUT • Some problems involve actions or processes. • To solve these problems, you can act it out. • Actively modeling the problem can help you find the solution.

  11. MAKE AN ORGANIZED LIST • In some problems, you will need to find how many different ways something can happen. • It is often helpful to make an organized list. • This will help you count the outcomes and be sure that you have included all of them.
