  1. Viruses dead or alive BY Brendan Seibert

  2. Viruses... The question • Over the years there has been a great question. Are viruses alive? I’ve decided to do some research , and see what people think. I looked at the following web sites. • Wikipedia, http://www.wikipedia.org/ • Microbe life, http://serc.carleton.edu/microbelife/ • Beyond the books, http://www.beyondthebooks.org/ • Erie County Dept. of Health, http://www.ecdh.org/ Now lets dive into the micro world of viruses!

  3. Viruses…. Wikipedia • Wikipedia reports that thoughts are very contradicting. They wonder if viruses are alive or organic material structures interacting with living things. • They further state that viruses are “On the edge of life” They have used natural selection ,but have no cells. Cells are thought of as “Building blocks of life”. • Viruses are “self assembling forms of life which may lead to the secrets of life,”.

  4. Viruses…. Microbe life • Microbe Life says that viruses wobble on the edge of life. They are somewhere between supra molecular complexes and simple biological entities. • They show some signs of life, such as moving on their own, however, they lack some abilities of living things like the ability to reproduce on their own.

  5. Viruses…. Beyond the books • Beyond the Books says that viruses are not alive. They are simply a strand of DNA coated in protein energy, which makes it not alive.

  6. Viruses…. ALIVE or NOT ALIVE • Reasons to believe that Viruses are alive. • They can move on their own • They have a means of gaining energy • They have a genetic code (DNA) • Reasons to believe that they are not alive • They can not reproduce on their own. • They do not grow in size. • They do not breath • They do not eat

  7. Viruses…. My conclusion • Like the scientific community I am still undecided. There is enough information on both sides that I can’t make up my mind. • But you can think of viruses as computers. They have a set of rules and they follow them.

  8. Viruses…. Prevention • Wash your hands. Experts agree that this is the best form of prevention • Get your flu shot. It’s always good to be safe. • Stay away from crowded places and from sick people.

  9. Viruses dead or alive ... Epilogue Flu That completes my report. For further information go to the Erie County Department of Health Website…. http://www.ecdh.org/ Thanks for your attention!
