  2. MidKent College • General FE college with two Campuses • Across two local authorities (Medway and Kent) • ~7,000 students (4,400 16-18) • New Campus opened 2009 • Major refurbishment programme • Ofsted graded ‘good’ • Areas of deprivation in both locations • Significant numbers of CLA/YCL

  3. The Strategy • Commitment from the top • Strong focus on support in the college • Initial work with one local authority and a pro active virtual head • Work with Aim Higher Kent and Medway – Buttle Pilot • Saw Buttle as a validation of our existing work • Became a catalyst for cohesion and development

  4. Threshold Services and the Designated Member of Staff (DMS) • Single point of contact • Aiding transition to FE • Liaising with agencies • Providing support with Careers and Finance

  6. An Opportunity to Audit Provision Some excellent practice, sometimes in isolation • Transition help (DMS) • Senior Leadership Mentoring Scheme • Additional Personal Tuition Sessions • Some good work between the College and partner agencies

  8. Key Developments • Drawn initiatives together across the college • A new approach to supporting vulnerable learners • A pre-arrival to post -departure service for all learners • A widely publicised promise • Increased self-disclosure

  9. Would it have happened anyway? • Not as quickly and not as successfully • A reason to focus and a source of impetus • Engaged management and provided leverage

  10. Is it working • Informing practice for all vulnerable learners • Better relationships with agencies • More students identified and supported than ever • Increasing retention and pre-empting problems • Better understanding of the needs of learners amongst all staff
