  1. 2 Corinthians 13:1-5 This is the third time I am coming to you. Every charge must be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. I warned those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that if I come again I will not spare them-- since you seek proof that Christ is speaking in me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you. • For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God. Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?--unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

  2. The Expectation of Growth

  3. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— (1 Peter 2:2). • But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen (2 Peter 3:18).

  4. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. (Hebrews 5:12-14)

  5. Time

  6. Growth Takes Time • For though by this time you ought to be teachers, (Heb 5:12a)ESV • For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, (KJV) • How much time has elasped?

  7. Time • God anticipates that enough time should lead to growth. • Time along with: • Food - the bread of life is he • Sun (Son) without me you can do nothing • Water – I would have given you living water • Effort - desire the sincere milk that you may grow

  8. Teaching

  9. Growth Takes Teaching • Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it for if the word spoken to us . . . (Heb 2:1-2a). • Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called "today," that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end (3:12-14).

  10. Teaching • They had heard the gospel. • They had obeyed the gospel. • They had learned of Jesus (Heb 1-4) • Christ is Divine: • Better than angels (Nature) • Better than Moses (Son over servant) • Better rest than Joshua (Rest) • Better priest than Aaron (Priesthood)

  11. Training

  12. Growth Takes Training • But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil (Heb 5:14). • 2) to exercise vigorously, in any way, either the body or the mind

  13. Training • Time, teaching, training • The combination produces growth • Give time to Christ (1:3-2:1-18) • Learn God’s word (3:1-15) • Practice what you learn (3:16-4:1-2)

  14. Am I Growing?
