How to engage in a complex, time poor world ? • Competing interests • Relevance for the different demographic groups • Need to have different models to appeal to different groups • Enough work for everybody We should not be competing but working together Community Engagement – The challenges Community Engagement : Landcare Australia’s Role

School groups and youth organisations • Focus on getting kids involved with their environment • Community volunteer environmental groups • Any group embracing the landcare ethos not just those with Landcare in their name • Farming community • Individual enterprises and well as cooperatives, groups, research organisations Community – who does LAL partner with? Catchment Management Authorities and other government agencies • For larger projects that need coordination across volunteer groups • Must be a local volunteer component • Other NGOs • Australian Conservation Volunteers, Greening Australia, Indigenous organisations, Earthwatch Institute, Planet Ark, etc Community – who does LAL partner with? Current perception is that it doesn’t • Arrogant, never responds to requests, website useless, doesn’t get funds to groups, etc • Grants • Competitive • Focused on priorities for both groups and the corporate partners • National Awards • Landcare week • Coastcare week • Other campaigns – e.g, National Tree Day • Enewsletters • Website and general enquires How does LAL engage ? Activities already mentioned • Will utilise the LAL Advisory Council and a newly formed steering committee to guide key activities and interactions • Forums, workshops, other activities to enhance networking • Need to become an effective conduit for information • Want to understand what the priorities are for the community • Supported by a National Landcare Directory that actually works • Match these to corporate partners • Get a greater number of smaller resources out to more groups How should LAL engage ? – The future Community Engagement : Landcare Australia’s Role
