  11. Librarian Comments • The South Carolina Digital Library (SCDL) project is playing an important role in enhancing access to information about our state's culture and history. The USC Aiken Library is pleased to join with other institutions across the state in contributing to this noble effort. We expect that our participation in the SCDL will significantly increase awareness of our local archives within our state and beyond. Pilot Project CommentBeaufort County Public Library • Would I do it again?  Yes.  I think that any cooperation between cultural heritage institutions benefits not only the participating institutions but greatly benefits the public by maximizing labor and content efforts, extends public awareness and research opportunities, while simultaneously minimizing financial expenditures for the taxpayers.  In other words, cooperative ventures help the public get the biggest bang for their buck. • Was it easy?  No.  I got no help from our Tech Services department so Amber and I had to do all the metadata on our own.  Not doing metadata on a regular basis, I was quite concerned that what we would be providing might not be “good enough.”  The key point I think for anyone considering a joint cultural heritage digitization project —particularly those folks who will work with smaller institutions that don’t have much of a division of labor or professional catalogers/digitizers on staff -- is:  fear of metadata is probably the highest hurdle for the folks to cross.  Or, at least in my case, it was my greatest fear:  doing the metadata.  Together Amber and I spent about 60 hours doing the metadata work alone.  It was a very stressful two weeks as the deadline loomed.   It caused me several restless nights wondering if I could pull this off in time.  If Chris hadn’t provided us with the grid from which to work, I think that the project would have been stillborn.  - Grace Cordial
