  4. Linking Verbs • Connects the subject of a sentence to a word or word group that describes the subject. • Linking Verbs from the verb BE • am has been may be • is have been might be • are had been can be • was will be should be • were shall be would have been

  5. Pronouns Words that replace the noun • His • Her • You Paul is playing his game. Susan is running with her brother. You have a good time.

  6. Adjectives • Words used to describe people, places, and things. The young man has on an orange shirt and white pants.

  7. Adverbs A word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb VERB People handle old violins carefully. ADJECTIVE Veryold violins are valuable. ADVERBS Orchestras almost always include violins.

  8. Prepositions A Preposition is a word that relates a noun or a pronoun to anther word in the sentence. The boy near the window is French. Common PREPOSITIONS

  9. Interjections • A word or group of words that express emotion Aha great ouch ha oh wow hooray Good grief! My favorite restaurant has closed. Oh well, I’ll just eat at home.

  10. Conjunctions • A coordinating conjunction is a word used to connect compound parts of a sentence. And, but, or, nor, and for are coordinating conjunctions. So and yet are also sometimes used as coordinating conjunctions. Allison and Austin have lived in Mexico. • Correlative conjunctions are pairs of words used to connect compound parts of a sentence. Correlative conjunctions include both…and, either…or, neither…nor, and not only…but also. Neither Jason nor Robert speaks Spanish.
