  1. EcolutionSustainable Resource Managementon the campusir. J.-H. Welinkwww.duurzaamgrondstoffenbeheer.nl (also English!) 015 – 278 9205j.h.welink@tudelft.nl

  2. Content • Developments in materials • Knowlegde Platform • Activities • On the campus • 11 student projects

  3. 1. Developments in materials • Consumption by the BRIC countries • R.E.E.: Rare Earth Elements • China: 97% REE: strong competitor • Dig deeper? Dig cleaner? • Alarmism and speculations • Textiles, metals, buiding materials and plastics

  4. 1. Developments in materials Neodymium Oxide Metals Plastics (PE’s) Cotton

  5. 1. Developments in materials • Materials roundabout, MP Stientje van Veldhoven • EU: Resource efficiency and management • Germany: Rohstoffenagentur • Scientific knowledge necessary

  6. 2. Knowledge Platform • Industry lacks information • At universities information is “on the shelf” • But: fragmented over a lot of univeristies, faculties and research groups • Knowlegde Platform: inter-university • Milgro is Founding Father • Mentioned in governmental policy as knowledge source

  7. 2. Knowledge Platform • Make knowledge available en “translate” • Trendwatching • Governments • Cooperation (e.d. Vereniging Afvalbedrijven) • Industrial network • Sponsorship and fee’s

  8. 3. Activities • Seminars (theme’s) • Dec. 15th : How do we get our resources back? • Feb. 29th : Design for Sustainable Resource management • Apr. 26th : New developments in recycling technology • July 3th : Resource management in practice • Oct. 3rd : New business models and resources • Dec. 4th : Risk minimisation by resource management

  9. 3. Activities • Masterclasses • Life cycle analysis • Industrial Ecology • Workshops • Plastic exchange network • Returning produce; how? • Student projects • Electronics LCA • Graduation (Rabobank)

  10. 4. On the campus What can we do at the campus? Recycling? Yes…… • Batteries (Stibat) • Textiles (VHT) • Electronics (Wecycle) • Plastics (Plastic hero) • Metals (cans, copper wire etc) • Discard plan e.g. computer, mobile phone (SiSo) • Don’t dump old books: book market! Contact “Facilitair Beheer” for actions

  11. 4. On the campus So: Free-cycle is great! But dropping off at Villa Rosa at specific times? Research shows it is al about………….

  12. 4. On the campus Convinience So put the bins close to the trails!

  13. 4. On the campus What can we do at the campus? Recycling? Yes, but: Smart use and re-use • Longer life products (lease, rent computers?) • Repair workshop • Re-use (internal “Marktplaats”), bookswap etc. • Smart use: double print action • Delete garbage can in room: only pantry? Be creative!!

  14. 5. 11 Projects We have 11 student projects • CO2 storage in a building? • More wood as CO2 buffer • How would look the ideal coffee cup look like? • Packaging and prevention of food wastage • Does energy pricing conflicts with recycling and mining? • What are the options to replace critical metals? • How does the cycle of Tin look like? • How does the cycle of Neodymium look like? • How does the cycle of Yttrium and Europium (TL-tubes) look like? • What are new business models for better resource efficiency? • What is the effect of leasing on product life?

  15. 5. Project 1 CO2 storage in a building? Increase Wood Cycle = CO2 buffer More wood in buildings (how?) Calculate potential and sustainable impacts

  16. 5. Project 2 More wood as CO2 buffer Same as 1) How many products to be replaced by wood, and other biomass What are feasable options Calculate potential and sustainable impacts

  17. 5. Project 3 How would look the ideal coffee cup look like? Many options (mug, disposable paper, plastic) Many Plastics (PLA, PE etc.) Many cycles (washing, recycling, logistics) Compare

  18. 5. Project 4 Packaging and prevention of food wastage Friut & vegatable pakced in plastic Plastic discarded: spillage Friut & vegetable discarded: spillage Comparison

  19. 5. Project 5 Does energy pricing conflicts with recycling and mining? High energy price: mining expensive, more recycling? Low energy price: mining cheap, less recycling? Compare

  20. 5. Project 6 What are the options to replace critical metals? Should we care? Indium TinOxide: ITO vs. OLED Neodymium: magnets wind turbines vs. other solutions Solar power: germanium vs. other solutions and developments

  21. 5. Project 7, 8 & 9 How does the cycle of: 7) Tin 8) Neodymium 9) Yttrium and Europium look like? • Import • Collection • Recycling and quality

  22. 5. Project 10 What are new business models for better resource efficiency? Sell? Lease? Rent? For which products?

  23. 5. Project 11 What is the effect of leasing on product life? Is lifetime increasing for leased products? Car? Equiepment? Are products returned??
